  1. Homeschool vs. Public School: Is There a One Size Fits All Education Model?

    One size fits all education

One of the following stories is true. Can you tell which one it is? (No skipping ahead!) Story 1: I believe in public education. I am a product of public school. I think the education I received up until my high school graduation was an excellent one; I was usually sufficiently challenged, I was given lots of opportunities for both academic enrichment and involvement in other activities, and I headed off to college well-prepared for the rigors that lay ahead. After completing college, I worked for a year, then headed to grad school. I consider myself smart, capable, well-educated, and a perfect example of how public school can work better than many are willing to admit.  Read more >

  2. Summer's Here! Time to Go Camping with Kids!

    Hybrid Camper

It was four years ago, shortly after I'd remarried, moved my kids to a new state, and we'd barely begun the process of blending together our new family. I remember it like it was yesterday: Why not take a quick camping trip? It would be an adventure! The kids would have a blast! Well, that may not have been the greatest recipe for success.  Read more >

  3. Rihanna vs. the Parents Television Council: 'Man Down' Video Inappropriate?

Rihanna vs. Parents - You Teach Your Children, Not Me.

In the middle of a season of crazy tornado weather and political scandals, what was the lead story yesterday on CNN.com? The fact that Rihanna's new music video was being called 'inexcusable' by a parent watchdog group.  Read more >

  4. Saying Goodbye to Elementary School

    School Crossing

I'm the one who's not sentimental. I'm the one who gathered with the other moms for coffee on that first day of preschool and while they blubbered about how their PRESHUS BAYBEES were growing up and they couldn't stand it, I was all, "Are you going to finish that scone?" and "This is the first uninterrupted cup of coffee I've had in three years!" It's not that I'm in a hurry for my kids to grow up, it's just that... it happens.  Read more >

  5. Gluten-Free? Not if You Ate at Damian Cardone's Restaurant!

    Pasta

Here in the United States, it's estimated that 1 in 100 people suffer from Celiac Disease. And something like fewer than .5% of people have a true wheat allergy. But add it up, and that's still a whole lot of people who may find themselves dangerously ill if they happen to eat wheat. It turns out that chef Damian Cardone took it upon himself to decide that gluten is good for everybody, and then he bragged on his Facebook wall about how he served regular high-gluten pasta when diners ordered gluten-free.  Read more >

  6. FDA Votes Not to Mandate Warnings for Food Coloring

    Popcicle

When it was announced that the FDA would consider adding warning labels to foods with artificial colorings, a collective roar arose from the Internet. In this corner, anti-regulatory proponents, pointing out that any link between artificial colors and behavioral impact remains tenuous; in that corner, plenty of naturalists decrying the need for neon colors in food, and a giant group swapping war stories of how insane their kids get when they eat this or that artificial dye in their snacks.  Read more >

  7. Animal Welfare Pioneer Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin (Photo by Nancy Kaszerman/ZUMA Press)

A lot of people -- maybe including you -- had never heard of Temple Grandin before last year's award-winning HBO movie about her life, for which Claire Danes won the Golden Globe for best actress. The movie is excellent, and Danes did a wonderful job of portraying Grandin as a teen and young woman.  Read more >

  8. Did You Give Up Social Media for Lent?

Ash Wednesday has come and gone, and if you're giving up something for Lent, chances are you're currently in the still-struggling phase of that sacrifice. (The first week is usually the hardest.) This year there seems to be a big trend toward giving up social media -- so much so that mainstream media is reporting on social media fasting as both popular and incredibly difficult to accomplish.  Read more >

  9. Groupon's FTD Failure a Valentine's Day PR Nightmare

    FTD Flowers

If you love saving money, chances are that you -- like me -- viewed Groupon's arrival on the frugal scene with initial suspicion that gave way to complete and unabashed devotion. Half off places you'd shop anyway? There's nothing wrong with that, except when, well, there are things wrong with that.  Read more >

  10. Quick, Panic! Processed Food Impacts IQ ... Maybe

    Junk Food

It's a sensational headline, designed to make parents everywhere sit up and take notice: A longitudinal study tracking around 14,000 British children from birth to age 8.5 found that -- shockingly! -- children who consumed diets composed mostly of processed foods had lower IQs than their healthier-eating counterparts.  Read more >

About Me:

Learn more about me or just visit my personal blog or come bargain hunt with me. Writing? Check. Parenting? Check. Shopping for shoes? Check. Yep, that pretty much covers the important stuff.

Something that might surprise you about me: I hold a U.S. patent for the design of a software installation user interface I worked on while at IBM. I used the bonus money I received for said patent to buy a washing machine, because I'm wild and crazy like that.
