    Since before Christmas, and my sister’s cancer diagnosis, when my mother-in-law was in the midst of her cancer treatments and a friend’s dad was fighting the same ravaging disease, I have not had it in me to write. I don’t know why.Sure, it’s logical that when so many people you care about have been irrevocably touched by an awful disease that it’s hard to let your mind stray far enough to find words, but I have written through a lot here; more than I even care to rehash (or link to).  Read more >

    She warms me.She has been at my feet all day, occasionally lifting her head to look out the window and protect me from the ever present stream of people walking to the park. She lays still until a truck rolls onto our street and she begins to shiver with fear and I feel her trembling against my leg.  Read more >

    Roughly 11 years ago, my friend Bean and I found each other. The details of our early friendship are long and sordid and involve way more than anyone, other than the two of us, would find amusing. Just know that we had known each other for years, yet barely acknowledged one another, then one night, in the light of a full moon, we bonded over a single Zeppelin tune.Okay, I don’t know if that moon thing is true, but the way we connected…my mind sees it that way And, the Zeppelin thing?     We had a guy here to fix our cable this afternoon. My son took one look at him and said, "You look like Santa!" The unsuspecting man, who doesn't know my shockingly honest sweet child, replied, "Why? Is it because of my beard?" My son answered, "No. It's your big, round belly".  Read more >

  8. Parenting Secrets We Like To Keep Secret

    Did you ever notice how many things no one tells you about parenting before you have kids? I'm not talking about how you'll never sleep again. Plenty of people told me that. No, I mean the little things. For instance, no one ever told me... ...that I would keep empty water bottles in my car for my son to pee in when we're on the road. ... that my longest fingernail would become the "booger-picker-outer", and if that didn't work, I'd retrieve boogers with a toothpick. ...that I would wipe snot off my son's face with a leaf.  Read more >

  9. I'm Beautiful In His Eyes

    Yesterday, my son climbed on my lap, held my face in his hands and said, “You are so, so, so, so pretty”. This was no ordinary compliment, considering it came from the kid who is usually commenting on someone’s most unattractive qualities. It was also remarkable because I don’t feel pretty much these days. Granted, there was a time when I looked all right. But, what once was gangly is now pudgy, what was firm is now wrinkled, what was straight is now slouched, and what was smooth is now scarred. I work out, I take my vitamins, I try to eat right, I’ve even been sleeping better, but I will never have what I once did.  Read more >
