  1. Phoning It In

Saturday morning is soccer practice. While the daughter is out on the field, I walk/run the track above, but tomorrow, I could join the other parents in the stand because as of tonight I have a smart phone too.Every Saturday, they sit with bums glued to hard plastic chairs and thumbs and eyes glued to their phones. A few have commented on my taking time to exercise instead of watch my daughter practice, but if I did sit with the other parents, I'd have been the only one watching the practice.  Read more >

  2. Winning

Nothing's official until the votes are tallied and sorted for fraud, but as it stands for tonight, I came in 5th in a blog off of moms who blog in Canada. The first week, I just wanted to hide and pretend I'd never been nominated. Votes roll in and rankings begin to take shape. It's like being weighed, measured and found just a bit fatter than you thought you were on The Biggest Loser. I tried to ignore it but my inner Catholic schoolgirl is drawn to competition like a toddler with a permanent marker is to a clean bare wall.  Read more >

  3. If You Could Only Have One, Movies or Music?

We gave up XM over the summer. The content never justified its expense, so it lost its place in the family budget. As a result, I had to get chummy with the local FM options and to my surprise; Edmonton's radio stations don't entirely suck.My favorite station by far is 102.3 aka Now Radio. The on air personalities seldom make my ears bleed and one of their morning guys would be worth an admission price, but luckily he's free.  Read more >

  4. When the Neighbors Smoke Pot

My younger brother lives in Marin County in California. It's not the best of neighborhoods, but he and his wife do the best they can to see to it that their two girls have what they need. She works for the county, and he is a maintenance worker at the apartment complex where they live. In addition to his own children, my brother took in our 17-year-old nephew recently. That's another long story, but the short of it is that his parents haven't really their job, and so my brother stepped up and took over.  Read more >

  5. Sense and Sensible Canadians

One of the things that amazes me about Canadians and winter weather is the common sense attitude about driving on bad roads. They simply won't. There is almost nothing that will compel a Canadian to take to the streets when the roads are treacherous. But that's just practical, you say. Who drives when the roads are scary bad?Americans. And I know because I was one.  Read more >

  6. Raising the Perfect Heathen

The youngest daughter doesn't believe in Jesus. In fact, she refers to the Christmas story as "that story about the kid whose family lived in a barn when he was born". Last winter, one her favorite games to play with friends at noon recess was "manger". They would build a crib out of snow and use sticks and leaves to represent the baby while they pretended to be sheep and mules. And you might wonder how this happened? How did a child baptised in the Catholic Church come to regard the whole thing as make believe.  Read more >

  7. Marriage in the Time of Home Renovation

The house was under renovation from the day I moved in four and a half years ago. If I am to believe the tales of my husband and stepdaughters, it has always been in some phase of improvement or other since shortly after it was purchased more than a decade and a half ago.Once, my younger stepdaughter asked her mother,"How can you stand the sound of constant hammering?"At this point, my husband Rob was re-siding the house, a project that technically isn't completed. His late wife was in the last months of her life. According to my stepdaughter, she replied serenely,  Read more >

  8. Thanks to IVF, I Conceived Ten Years Ago Today

Ten years ago today, I conceived. It's an odd thing to be able to pin down the conception of one's child to practically the minute, but on this day all those years ago, the doctor harvested my eggs, the late husband contributed his "sample" and wee daughter's existence began.  Read more >

  9. When the Husband Offers to Take You Dancing

My husband Rob called from work to update me on the details of the children's Christmas party his company hosts every year at the GalaxyLand Amusement park at Edmonton's mega-mall. Even though the wee daughter would sooner be peeled like a grape than ride on anything, she insists that we attend. To make the event less deadly dull for us, we allow her to invite along one friend, who then stays overnight."And there is an adult party this year," he added. "Would you like to go?"  Read more >

  10. Is It Okay to Tell Your Child She Didn't Do a Good Job?

The youngest daughter is nine, and a year and a half ago, she decided to abandon the world of dance for the soccer field. My reaction was mixed. I loathed the world of dance moms, but as a recovering Catholic schoolgirl, completive sports probably aren’t the best alternative.I played sports the way most women of my generation did - with cutthroat abandon. Not for us was the idea of that sports was all about the "fun" and the "team spirit". We played to win. Second was, and continues to be, the first loser for me.  Read more >

About Me:

I live in Alberta, Canada. Moved here when I met a guy on the Internet and we decided that LDR's where international borders are concerned just don't work. I write. Blog periodically at Care2 but mostly on my own. Someday, I am going to write a book, but in the meantime - and when I am not writing - I wife, mother, household and teach yoga. It's not as granola/Carole Brady an existence as it sounds, but it's a whole lot better than the single mom full time high school teacher gig I had previously.
