  1. A Jane Austen Education: A Review of a Review (Spoilers!)

A Jane Austen Education by William Deresiewicz, is in essence a very long book review. Of course this makes sense as Mr. Deresiewicz is book reviewer and former professor of English at Yale.  Read more >

  2. All I Can Say About Girl in Translation is "Wow!"

Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok is one of the most compelling, captivating books I have read in a long, long time. I haven't had an ending to a book surprise me in I don't know how long, but this one did.  Read more >

  3. Caleb's Crossing: A Neat Little Nugget of History

Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks is based on a very neat little nugget of history: in 1665 a Native American by the name of Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck was the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Ms. Brooks took that nugget and ran.  Read more >

  4. My own little victory garden

We added a fourth bed this weekend. In it I planted yellow corn (upper right quarter), white corn (lower left quarter), cucumbers (upper left corner) and watermelon (lower right corner). Intersecting in the shape of a cross are giant sunflowers (after the heads dry you can eat the seeds). I covered the bed with dead leaves for mulch and nutrients.  Read more >

  5. Vampires and Ghosties and Graveyards OH MY!

So for Christmas I lucked out and received three new books, which for me is like, the best present. (ok clothes, jewels and money are always appreciated). The first two books are the first two in the "Sookie Stackhouse" series, (by Charlaine Harris) upon which the HBO series "True Blood" are based. Now I asked for the first book, because I thought the premise for the show was interesting (and I don't get HBO so I figured, I'd read the books and decide if renting the DVDs would be worth it or not). The second book was a bonus. And here is my review: Ew.  Read more >

  6. Here's help with at least one New Year's Resolution! (oh and there's a contest too!)

Everyone and their Great-Aunt Edna has the weight loss resolution and you know what? I do too. This year is especially fraught with resolve as I turn 40 in one month and one day from today and I plan on looking 31 days better and brighter when it gets here. Over at MK Skin Care we have some new weight loss sets to help you out with your own weight loss goals.  Read more >

  7. Dress the body you have.....

Ok I'm all for the *idea* of dressing the body you have, not the body you want. In theory it's swell. In reality, the body I have now is carrying 20 extra pounds of pudge that I will continue to blame on the Depo-Provera shot for as long as I am receiving it. In reality I'm wearing a 10 and in reality that's not a bad size, but MY REALITY is that I wore a 2 for 4 years before becoming pregnant with my now 3 year old and I wore a size 2 for the last 6 months of his first year before becoming pregnant with my now 18 month old.  Read more >

  8. an easy way to help find a cure for autism

The band, Five for Fighting, is generously donating $0.49 to Autism Speaks for *each time* the video is viewed. The funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to watch the video and pass it along to your friends and family. They are aiming for 10,000 hits, but hopefully we can help them to surpass this goal. Get ready to cry and smile. What kind of world do you want  Read more >

  9. It's all right to ask if I am breastfeeding, but it's not all right to actually breastfeed?

My baby will be 6 months old tomorrow. He weighs 22 pounds. He's a little porker baby and just the cutest thing going. He's exclusively breastfed. Here's what gets me. We all know that there is the HUGEST upset over breastfeeding in public. It's the biggest deal going and we all know how people respond to it. Most strangers out there do not want to watch us lactating mamas feed the children in public. So how come those exact same strangers can ask me if that is why my son is so chunky?  Read more >
