  1. My roommate and I would like to spend less on our hotel room and more on the town during the Blogher conference this year. That means four to a room and two to a bed. If you and a friend would like to bunk with us, please email me at rebecca@playgroundconfidential.com and we can go from there.Rebeccaplaygroundconfidential.com  Read more >

  2. The Beaches

Sometimes in the summer the kids and I will pick up Ed from work and then drive right across town to the east-end Beaches for dinner and a stroll on the boardwalk. We do it when it’s easier than facing the throng of late rush hour traffic heading west. I do it when I just can’t face going home quite yet. We never plan ahead; we just go.  Read more >

  3. A Day in This Life

First it’s bodies hovering and leaping and flopping all around. “Don’t jump over the baby. Don’t jump over the baby. Don’t jump over the baby.” Then it’s nurse the baby, change the baby, cajole the kids into getting dressed. It’s the trial and error process of discovering which of her two or more dozen shirts is the one that Irene will deign to wear today. It’s trying to convince Colum that sitting still and concentrating is actually faster than flinging your body across your bed super hero-style.  Read more >

  4. Best-Laid Birth Plans

I am Canadian. New York magazine, therefore, hits my news stands three weeks late and I have only just read “Extreme Birth,” Andrew Goldman’s article about NYC home-birth midwife Cara Muhlhahn and home births in general. I have been wanting a good lead-in to a home birth discussion for a long time, so even though this article prompted much  Read more >

  5. Easter Means ...

Easter means, Winter’s last snow, more times than not, and coughs and colds and sniffles. New running shoes and spring jackets and rolling up my sleeves for a good spring clean. Fish and chips on Good Friday. Lots and lots of chocolate. Bunnies. Spring chicks and ducklings, too, but mostly bunnies.  Read more >

  6. Don't Quit Your Day Job

This is a post on how frustrating (impossible?) it is to work from home while caring for your children. The fates must be smiling on me because they so aptly illustrated that point by having my children pull me away from the post I was composing. I left my computer with such haste that I failed to save my work. My browser then crashed and all is lost.  Read more >

  7. A Drop of Golden Sun

So the verdict is in and it looks like we should all be hoovering up the vitamin D supplements on a daily basis. Especially breastfed babies. New studies are heralding this standard vitamin as the panacea prevention against everything from cancer to osteoporosis.  Read more >

  8. Mama Goes to the Prom

Squeezing past the gaggle of gorgeous twenty-somethings in the Royal Ontario Museum’s ladies room on Saturday night, I couldn’t help but wish I’d kept up with this season’s Gossip Girl. Here I was rubbing shoulders with the young elite of Canadian high society, and all I could think about was whether my borrowed dress could contain my ever-increasing milky bosom.  Read more >

  9. Sex in the Schools

Sex education is de rigueur up here in Canada, thank god. We don’t have to constantly grapple with the “abstinence only” crackpots that are hijacking the American school system, despite overwhelming support for a more comprehensive sex ed. Remember, “abstinence only” is a gateway curriculum to creationism. Nonetheless, the Globe and Mail reported  Read more >

  10. Does My Baby Have Reflux?

Does my baby have reflux? Why do people keep asking me that? And why do I not seem to care? It is true that Li’l I spits up quite a bit at times. But she seems pretty healthy and happy to me, for one. Also, I seem to remember all the babies spitting up from time to time — Young C and my youngest siblings, too. So I refused to be worried. But then my doctor noticed her hiccuping at her last checkup and asked whether she spits up frequently.  Read more >
