  1. OMG! I'm A Grandmother!

    omg!

Johnny Mac Pippin, aka Aiden Samuel, was born at Tripler Army Medical Center on May 15, 2012 at 12:36pm. He weighed a whopping 8lbs and was 21" long. His mother had no drugs and the only assistance was breaking the water 90 minutes before he made his way into the world. Yep. My beautiful, tiny baby birthed a good size baby of her own -- and she did it fabulously. I was in awe of her strength and her determination. Two days later and I'm still in awe. Rockstar. Super Hero. Birthing Goddess. That's my girl!  Read more >

  2. OMG I Can't Wait to Be a GrandMother: How Can We Bring On Labor?

jenn at royal birthing rocks (denise's photo)

I made it to Hawaii and Johnny Mac Pippin's mom looks like she is very ready to bring him into the world -- but Johnny Mac Pippin is not showing any sign of moving. Well he's showing a lot of signs of moving, elbows and knees and feet banging around inside there -- but he's looking altogether too comfortable and I'm ready for him to come out and kick ME a little bit. So how the heck do we convince him that it's time? Are there any tricks for bringing on labor that really work?  Read more >

  3. I could totally rig my May list -- I could put "take a day off!" on my list and ... poof, done. But, it's not right to add something THAT easy to the list, the whole point of putting "take a day off" on the list is to encourage me to do something I would not normally do. So... nope. It's not there. I do think I'll be able to get these done -- surely -- with three weeks of vacation time in front of me...  Read more >

  4. OMG! I'm Going to Be a Grandmother! Wait. What Does a Grandmother DO?

    what do grandmas do?

My son-in-law was released from the boat and came home to put the crib and dresser changing table combo thingy together. There's been a virtual baby shower and an in-real-life baby shower. Jenn is starting to complain a little bit because 36 weeks feels a whole lot more pregnant than 35 weeks. I'll be in Hawaii in a few weeks and Johnny Mac Pippin will be here soon and I'm back to saying, "OMG I'm Going to Be a Grandmother!" again. It's also started to hit me that I don't exactly know what that means.  Read more >

  5. A Layette for Every Baby? Would That Work in the USA?

    layette set

Babies are expensive, even without an addiction to onesies and falling prey to all of the fancy baby gear gadgets on the market today. All of this "grandmother" blogging has me extra-focused on baby layettes, which is probably why three people sent me the link to Annie PhD's post, A Layette from the Government. This is an interesting topic, whether or not you're a parent or soon-to-be-grandparent -- and I can't decide which side of the idea I'm on.  Read more >

  6. Facebook Buys Instagram for $1 Billion

Instagram logo (fair use logo thumbnail)

Here I am, minding my own business and trying to write a blog post about being a grandmother that somehow turned into a political post about health care when TW says to me, "Facebook bought Instagram for ONE BILLION DOLLARS" (in cash and shares.) My response, "That's nice." Then, my co-workers started talking about it and my response changed to, "Yippee!" Why? Because I'm a Facebook fan and while I don't use Instagram very often, I know a whole lot of people who do.  Read more >

  7. Could I ignore my To Do Lists any more than I have been this year? March was especially bad. Either I don't know anything at all about my life or someone is doing his/her darnedest to screw me up. Probably a combination of the two. But now it's April and I have to get some stuff done. Johnny Mac Pippin is coming and he won't wait until I get everything on my list crossed off. So...  Read more >

  8. OMG! I'm Going to Be a Grandmother and I Hate Gender Marketing

    gender marketing

When I hijacked TW and told her we were going to Toys R Us for inspiration for my blog post about all of the baby gear parents have nowadays, she heckled. Inspiration at the toy store? Impossible. We'd just be frustrated and grouchy! Which is generally true, but I was prepared for all of the things that generally bug me about toy stores.  Read more >

  9. OMG! I'm Going to Be a Grandmother and What Are All of These New-Fangled Products, Anyway?

    old swing

OMG, having a baby is a whole lot harder nowadays than it was when I was having them. Who knew something so basic could change so much in 25 or 30 years? Seriously, do babies (and parents) really need all of these new fangled products, or deluxe products? Take diapers, for instance. Even disposable diapers are more confusing today than they were 25 years ago.  Read more >

  10. Last month I wrote about reading Bad Luck Cadet, written by BlogHer's very own Bad Luck Detective. If you read that post, you know how much I loved the book and how much I adore Suzie Ivy. You probably won't be surprised that I'm back again to tell you how much I enjoyed Bad Luck Officer!  Read more >

About Me:

As the BlogHer.com Community Manager, I have the most awesome job in the entire world. I get to wander around the internets and read YOUR blog and talk to you all day on Chatter, Twitter and Facebook. I answer a lot of email, too. (You can always reach me at denise@blogher.com if you have BlogHer related questions, though asking on Chatter is often a wee bit quicker.)

I have the most awesome family in the world too.

My partner and I live in the Chicagoland suburbs (which is not the most awesome place in the world to live) with three four three of our six kids. (The other three are all grown up and living on their own.) My grandson, Johnny Mac Pippin, was born on May 15th and lives in Hawaii, which is too darn far away. My partner's mom (and her little dog too) lives with us as well.

Besides the dog, we have a very loud cockatiel who we're hoping will move out when the middle child goes to college and we have three prairie dogs. Yes, prairie dogs. You can follow their exploits at Prairie Dog Digest.

I read a lot, but not as much as my partner does, and the only TV I watch is Survivor. Now if Buffy or Gilmore Girls returned to TV....
