  1. Back, Back, Back To School Again

Oh, my. I am officially the mother of a third grader. How did this happen? Where did the time go? Just yesterday I was helping her take off the tops of the Play-Doh cans and wiping snot off her upper lip. Today, I sent her off to third grade and was refused when asked if I needed to help her get ready for her first day.  Read more >

  2. Oh, The Habits of Hobbits

So, I took a long hard look in the mirror the other day and came to a decision. I’m a Hobbit. Yes, you read that right. I’m a Hobbit. Most likely related to Samwise Gamgee. Partly because I have that same sense of self-entitlement that Sean Astin seems to have. But mostly because of his self-determination to complete the task no matter what. However, this post is not about self-determination. It’s about me resembling a Hobbit.  Read more >

  3. Movies

I have an obsession. With movies. I personally own over 300 DVD's. That doesn't include my TV shows on DVD, my daughter's DVD's or all the VHS tapes I used to own (over 300 of those at one point, as well). I "heart" movies. I love the feeling of disappearing into another World for approximately 2 hours. A World that I don't live in. A World that at times I'd like to live in (Princess Bride anyone?) and a World that I wouldn't like to live in (Donnie Darko anyone?). Especially Donnie Darko since it has Jake Gyllenhaal. I can't stand that kid.  Read more >

  4. Hard Candy

I recently watched the movie, Hard Candy. I decided to do a review of this on my own personal blog and to also do a review here at BlogHer.  Read more >

  5. Automatic Flushing Toilets (or ATF's)

I can't stand these. Whoever invented these ought to be shot. For you germaphobes......grow a pair and use your foot like the rest of us to flush a toilet. Or, grab some tp and use it to cover the handle to flush.  Read more >

  6. Party Invitations

My daughter is getting ready to turn 8 pretty soon. It’s that time of year again for the birthday party. Sigh. It’s so much more fun to attend than plan. Before she reached school age, it was easy on the invites. You just invited the kids you wanted to come. Period. When she reached kindergarten, she was attending a school in a different state from which we normally lived. Not only did she have to attend school for the first time (I don’t count pre-school because she attended pre-school at her daycare), but it was in a new place with new people. She did fine and made friends.  Read more >

  7. Tearless Onion

They're developing an onion that doesn't make you cry. There's this vegetable geneticist that's trying to prevent diseases from occurring in onions and during the course of their manipulations, they discovered that they can block the gene that mixes with another gene in the onion that causes tears when you cut it up. Apparently (this is new to me), there are two genes that, separate, don't cause a reaction. However, whenever you cut into the onion, the two genes mix and this causes the enzyme to make you cry. Here's a quote by Dr. Colin Eady:  Read more >

  8. Jimmy Buffett Reminds Me of Lazy Days in Florida

I am a huge Jimmy Buffett fan. I even go so far as to call myself a Parrothead although I’m not as gung ho as many out there. I love all his work. His old stuff and his new. However, the old stuff still holds a special place in my heart. I attended my first Jimmy Buffett concert when I was 9 years old. I can remember sitting there by mom at the concert and being ecstatic that I could actually say the word “damn” since it was in a Jimmy Buffett song (“Margaritaville” for those of you not in the know). Yes, I know, it’s silly, but when you’re 9, that’s cool.  Read more >

  9. Shame on Tourists

I went to Mardi Gras this past weekend. I took my daughter out of school for two days so she could attend as well. She was born and raised in New Orleans and we recently moved from there to a small town. We still have friends and one family member still there, so we had plenty of places to stay and plenty of things to catch up on. My friend's daughter (who's 16) and I went downtown on Sunday night to catch Bacchus as it rolled down Canal Street.  Read more >
