  1. Why Do You Blog?

I’m back in DC after a wonderful trip to San Francisco for BlogHer 08. I was an official live blogger for three conference sessions, one of which was “Building Traffic via Content and Community“. The session was incredibly informative and thought-provoking, and I wanted to talk a bit more about it today. One of the first questions the moderator (Elise of Simply Recipes) posed to the audience was “Why do you blog?” Er. Um. Because everyone else is doing it? Seriously–I don’t know about you, but I had never asked myself that question before. I’ve given a great deal of thought to what I blog ABOUT (personal development, career, finding your purpose, body image and disordered eating), to the kind of message I want to communicate to my readers (you can do it!), to the way my website looks (snazzy new redesign), but I had never asked myself why I’m blogging in the first place.  Read more >

  2. Getting Your Ducks in a Row

I’ve officially reached “that age”. Pretty much every conversation I have with my girlfriends these days devolves into talk of babies–whether we want them, when to have them, how many to have, how to raise them, etc.. Ah, the joys of aging. Having kids isn’t an “if” for me–my husband and I know that we want children… someday. We’re just not sure when that someday will be. We want to be sure to have all of our ducks in a row before we take such a huge step in our lives. That’s the smart way to do things, right?  Read more >

  3. BlogHer '08 Running Buddy?

I'll be attending BlogHer '08 (it's my first time--so excited!), and I'm hoping to find a running buddy for my long run. I'm currently training for a marathon, and I'll be running nine miles (pace will be around 9:00-minute to 9:30-minute miles depending on hills) on Saturday morning. I'll leave the hotel around 6:00 am. Let me know if you're interested!  Read more >

  4. Believe It or Not

Every year, my family (dad’s side) has a huge July 4th cookout at my parents’ house. The whole family attends, and with seven siblings (who produced 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren), it’s quite a sizable crowd. There is always great food, fireworks, gallons of beer, a gang of screaming kids, and a lot of laughter. I love these gatherings, but they have a tendency to press my mental rewind button and transport me back in time to the attitudes and beliefs of my childhood–for better or for worse. Most of our deep-seated, unconscious beliefs about the way the world works are internalized early in childhood. Unfortunately, these beliefs often reflect the fears and anxieties of our parents. (This is the thing that terrifies me the most about having and raising children–that I will pass along my issues like some kind of hereditary disorder.) For example, a single mother whose husband left her during pregnancy may unintentionally pass along to her daughter the belief that men are unreliable and cannot be trusted. As you might imagine, this belief could cause the daughter to have serious difficulties in relationships when she is older. The worst part is that she may not even know why–the belief may be buried so deeply that she isn’t even aware of it.  Read more >

  5. The Life I'm Supposed to Lead

A close friend of mine called me yesterday afternoon to tell me that the guy she’d been seeing had just ended their (somewhat casual) six-month relationship. Like any good girlfriend would, I picked up a bottle of cabernet and headed over to her place. She was absolutely devastated, which surprised me as I hadn’t realized that her feelings for him were that strong. “Are you in love with him?” I asked. “What?” she said, surprised. “No! God, no. I’m just…” “Hurt?” I guessed.  Read more >

  6. Make the Most of Your Time

My typical Saturday goes something like this… (Lord, this is embarrassing.) Wake up around 7:30am and make breakfast. Surf the internet and catch up on blogs for a few hours (I know, I know). Go for a run. Come back and shower. Grab some lunch–eat while surfing the internet again. Write for an hour or two. Straighten up the house. Watch some TiVo’d programs (Battlestar Galactica, House, Law & Order SVU, The Office). Make dinner. Watch TV or movies until bed. Repeat on Sunday. Sure, I get some things done (a little bit of writing, a run, cleaning), but the bulk of my weekend is frittered away on mindless entertainment. I didn’t truly realize the impact this was having on my life until recently.  Read more >

  7. A Lesson from the Time Traveller

I just finished reading The Time Machine by H.G. Wells, and it just prompted a jarring realization. (If you haven’t read it and don’t want the ending spoiled, don’t click the hyperlink in the previous sentence. And don’t worry–I won’t give away any more than I have to in this post.) If you’re not familiar with the book, I’ll give enough background for this post to make sense. An amateur inventor creates a time machine and takes a trip to the future. Humans have apparently evolved into small, frail, androgynous creatures (called the Eloi) who live a peaceful, leisurely existence. These creatures are childlike–they lack intelligence, curiosity, and creativity. The Time Traveller (he is never named) develops a theory as to why humans seem to have mentally devolved instead of advanced:  Read more >

  8. You've Got to Want It

In her recent post, JoLynn at The Fit Shack (by whom I’m always greatly inspired) said this: “When it comes to weight loss, you’ve got to want it more than you want to use food. Your desire to lose weight and get fit must be greater than your desire to emotionally eat or to drown yourself in sugar addiction. Once you have the desire then you can move on…” This prompted a flurry of instrospective soul searching on my part. Do I really want to be healthy and fit? If so, why doesn’t my lifestyle match my desire? Do I really want to be a successful writer? If so, why is it sometimes so hard to get myself writing?  Read more >

  9. Fat Is Not a Feeling!

“I feel fat.” How many times have you uttered those words? Or if not you, your coworker, your mother, your sister, your best friend, or your daughter?  Read more >

  10. Self-Esteem & Spirituality

Today’s post focuses on self-esteem and spirituality, and comes to us courtesy of the Belle of the Blog. Belle presents a particularly interesting (and original) take on the relationship between our view of ourselves, our view of others, and our view of the world and What Made It. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! “I know I’m somebody, ‘cause God don’t make no junk.” I remember the first time I ever saw or heard that phrase. It was on a little plaque hanging over the desk of one of my mother’s co-workers. There was a little country-mouse of a girl on the plaque, with mussed-up hair and two missing front teeth. I was seven and it seemed really silly to me to see something like that in an office. I also felt like whoever wrote it had made a mistake. God most indeed did make junk. I was proof of it. About Me:

My name is Jen, and here are the basics:

- I was born in May of 1978 in the backwoods of Virginia, and I’m a coal miner’s daughter.

- I left home to go to a huge state college in 1995 (I was barely 17).

- When I realized I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I–who had never held a wrench or fixed anything more complicated than a piece of toast–dropped out of college and joined the Navy as a mechanic in 1998.

- After I got out of the military, I spent two years in Asia studying religion, history, and politics and got a bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies.

- I came to DC, where I still live today, and earned a Master’s in International Affairs.

- I got a job working for the federal government in 2004, where I’m still just another cog in the wheel of the faceless bureaucracy.

- After kissing many a frog, I married my Prince Charming in December 2007. (Yes, we went to Disney World on our honeymoon.)

Since I left home lo these many years ago, my life has been alternately depressing, exhausting, confusing, and exhilirating. But as the past two or three years have edged closer and closer to happiness and fulfillment, I’ve recognized that I’m living a charmed life. Well, semi-charmed anyway (after all, I still have to deal with bills, hangnails, and office drama).

I started my website because I want to share what I’ve learned as I progressed from College Dropout to World Traveling Gypsy to Frustrated Bureaucrat, and finally, to Semi-Charmed Wife.
