100 of my favourite things.

Several months ago a friend wrote a post about 100 things she loves. I loved the idea and the post. This time of the year encourages more focus on the good. So, in no particular order, and with some repetition from the About page on this blog, here goes:...more

Shop Local: These are a few of my favourite things.

I don’t often write about products; with the exception of writing about cheese and croissant, but those are necessities like oxygen and water. It’s not that I don’t like things, I do, but I’m not a shopper. I’m an in and out kind of woman, which sounds so much better in my head and within the context of shopping.Anyway…....more

Will is a liar.

The word will is deceptive.I will explore.I will breathe.I will run.I will laugh.I will love.Will is a nimble thief. He slips in uninvited, unnoticed, and turns plans into maybes. Subtlety and comfort are his cloak, lulling the unwary into complacency. Always waiting. He is skilled at diversion and time is his currency....more

Can we all just shut the f!ck up?

I am really tired of reading posts that say they’re against fueling the mommy and women wars yet are doing exactly that. The big hullabaloo—this week, anyway—stems from a selfie that new mom, blogger and obvious fitness fan, Caroline Berg Eriksen posted of herself four days after the birth of her daughter. The interwebs exploded. Again. Yawn. Anyone else bored by all the rage? I’ve read posts that ranged from support to vitriol to judgment hidden behind a thin veil of support. Picture a backhanded compliment and you have the idea....more

Super Simple Bruschetta

It’s rare for bruschetta to miss the mark. After all, the garlic, tomato and olive oil combo make it a perfect complement to most anything and it’s a quick appetizer to make ahead for parties. I like to serve it with fresh Parmesan because cheese makes everything better....more

How to open a pomegranate.*

Let’s get the serious business out of the way.My apologies if the following video blog (I just can’t use the word vlog with a straight face.) embarrasses Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi. They visited the Chatelaine kitchen several weeks ago and while making a salad, opened a pomegranate in a blink or two of an eye. With a few deft smacks of a wooden spoon Tamimi emptied the pomegranate and my world was rocked. Not to put an ûber-dramatic spin on things….but WOW. I still can’t believe how much time I used to waste fighting with this fruit....more

The top-secret math equation behind aging nobody talks about.

The thing about aging is that it’s 3 parts cool stuff and 1 part sucks ass....more

I love them both

I carry two passports. France and Canada own pieces of me. Some say it’s waffling, not being proudly, firmly one or the other. I am Canadian. I am also French.Step inside our home and it’s clear that both have a bearing on our lives. In small ways. In big ways. Every day.A hockey bag propped in the corner of our family room. It’s late June, but where else would it be? CanadaA well-used, hand-woven shopping basket that crossed an ocean with us sits inside the front closet. France...more

The misadventures of a boot camp newbie.

I have a boot camp injury because of course I do.Turns out you can sprain a finger while lowering yourself to the ground for a fun session of a move best described as a soles of the feet together, butt off the ground tilt & lift the likes of which was last seen as the baby you were growing launched out of your nether regions, and that targets those lower abs that refuse to show themselves no matter how many times you kindly (tragically) refuse the cupcakes that people will keep pushing on you.Sigh....more

Q&A: Author Kim Foster on A Beautiful Heist.

Kim Foster’s book came out on June 6th and I bought it on June 6th. I’m patient like that. I flew through her book. A Beautiful Heist is a fun and fast read. Our heroine (or villain) Cat is relatable and I cheered for her from the first page. The suspense, thrills, and romance kept me engaged and I fell for the characters. One beef (I’m looking at you Kim.)…I have to wait for book two. ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦...more
