  1. Sapphire's The Kid: Difficult To Read, Difficult Not To

Fate -- or rather, BlogHer -- stepped in and handed me a copy of The Kid, author Sapphire's second novel, which continues a few years after Push ends. I put myself on my city library's waiting list for Push so I could read the novels in the correct order. But I made the mistake of opening The Kid and reading the first few pages. Then I couldn't put it down -- even though I really , really wanted to.  Read more >

  2. Move over, Jacob: Caleb from Caleb's Crossing is my new hero

I have a confession to make: I decided to read Caleb's Crossing because I had just finished reading Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, and my mind was full of middle-aged housewife fantasies about the Native American werewolf, Jacob Black. Another tale of romance between a hot, shirtless Native American and his white, book-loving, doesn't-feel-like-she-belongs-in-her world childhood best friend? Bring it on!  Read more >

  3. The Worst Valentine's Day Gifts Ever

    Snuggie for Two

Valentine's Day is coming up, and you've got less than a week to come up with the perfect present for the love of your life.  What's it going to be?  The usual flowers and candy?  An original love sonnet?  A trip to Greece?  I don't know you and I'm no Dear Abby, so I can't tell you what the perfect present is -- but I can certainly tell you what it isn't.  There are some things you just should not be gifting on Valentine's Day, no matter who you are or who your mate is.  Read more >

  4. Behind the Scenes at the "American Idol" finals

    American Idol finale

I was a rabid American Idol fan for eight seasons, but when Season Nine started, I took stock of my must-see TV list, realized there were way too many shows on it, and decided that AI had to go. So when I found out I had won a trip to the Season Nine American Idol finals, my second thought (after AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! OMG I WON!) was, "Drat, it came one season too late." But how could I miss the chance to see Simon, Randy, and Ryan? Besides, an all-expense-paid trip is an all-expense-paid trip, so I quickly got back into the AI spirit, chose my favorites (Go Michael! Go Crystal!), made my I LOVE SIMON COWELL poster, and got ready to enjoy myself.  Read more >

  6. Sibling Rivalry: It's Not Fair!

    Sibling Rivalry

With three children in the house (and two of them twins), sibling rivalry is inevitable. It's rampant. And it's exhausting to referee. I don't keep a tally of how many birthday parties and playdates each child has or buy presents to make up for any shortfalls, but I do what I can to even things out, keep the accusations of favoritism at bay and generally preserve my sanity domestic harmony.  Read more >

  7. A friend of the family recently experienced a horrible tragedy when her ex-partner and father of her children was ambushed and killed on the way to joining them on vacation (they live in Brazil and unfortunately this is much more common than it is in the US).  His laptop was in the car and it got stolen.  And with it, all their photos.  7 years worth.  ALL OF THEM.   Read more >

  8. Last week I attended a talk on internet safety by Marian Merrit of Symantec.  She gave a great overview of the challenges that face kids and parents today online -- cyberbullying, bullying, predators, hate groups, sexting, identity theft, online addiction, all that good stuff.  She also gave some great tips on how parents can help teach their kids to navigate through today's digital world.  You can download a free copy of her Family Online Safety Guide here:   Read more >

  9. Don't you wish it was illegal to have so many places to upload photos?  You have Flickr, Picassa, Facebook, Twitpic, Photobucket and that sort to share with friends and the general public, then you have Tiny Prints, Shutterfly, Snapfish and the like if you want to order prints and cards and gifts.  Even Evite asks me if I want to upload photos of my event and share them with my guests!   Read more >

  10. How to Make Perfectly Shaped Cookies

I love baking cookies, but until recently I've never been fond of baking cut-out cookies. I've always found them to be too much effort, the results too uneven, the taste too bland. For lazy bakers like me, bar cookies like lemon squares or heath toffee bars are the only way to go: just dump your whole bowl of batter into a pan and cut into squares!  Read more >
