  1. Help for Parents Whose Kids Won't Do Their Homework

    Homework

There are always kids who love to read, love to study, and find true fulfillment in school work and expanding their minds. And then you have the other 95% of children -- those who would rather be outside playing with friends, riding bikes or watching SpongeBob. If you are like me, you may have a child who fits the second parameter. How in the world do you help encourage your child?  Read more >

  2. Creating a Good Study Habit for Your Kids

    Studying

Back to school is right around the corner. I know, I know -- doesn't it seem like summer vacation just started? We've been hanging out by the pool and enjoying sleeping late, but the stores have already started the Back to School sales. When you are buying the notebooks -- remember, every one needs to be a different color, no characters unless child approved, and don't forget that every other one needs pockets, except that the one for Spanish needs brackets -- take the time to create a great study environment for your children.  Read more >

  3. Parenting Teens: Piercings and Tattoos?

    Tattooed Woman

On the other hand, my 15-year-old daughter wants piercings. Multiple. Belly button, a rod in the ear, various other places -- although not breast or labial, thank God. But I'm not a big fan of piercings, and she trains Muay Thai. I've known girls who had piercings ripped out while sparring. So I told her no.  Read more >

  4. Adult Friendships: They're Hard

    Lucy and Ethel

One day, I will buy the entire set of I Love Lucy episodes. I do not have a lot of friends.  Read more >

  5. Death By Fire Truck Questions

    Fire Truck

One of my boys asks a lot of questions. A LOT of questions. Often he spread them out and asks them of other people -- his siblings, his dad, his friends and teachers. I don't mind answering questions -- truly, I don't, for how else will he learn? But, sometimes, my patience is shattered.  Read more >

  6. Attack of the Infomercial

    Touch Brush

When I was attempting to get seven-year-old Emma and six-year-old Riley to bed one evening, I realized that I could not find Riley. I had sent her to the bathroom to get her toothbrush, and she never returned. I walked into the bathroom and found her sitting on the closed toilet with tears running down her face. Between sobs, she managed to choke out, "I just want ... to get the thing ... that holds the toothpaste ... and you can get out the last drops!"    Read more >

  7. In Which My Daughter Learns the Other Meaning of the Word "Commando"

    Commando

I went to the mall for a new blush. The stars of "having a spare penny" and "time to go to the mall" as well as "freedom from little people" aligned perfectly. I had planned to go all alone, but my teenage daughter had other plans and begged me to take her. I soon realized why -- she wanted to "discover" Victoria's Secret, and my mind blew up when I realized that she meant to purchase push-up bras.  Read more >

  8. So I was wondering what features you enjoy in your Phone. And, really, what phone you have, what you like about it, and what you hate about it.I really only use my phone for Twitter, Facebook and email. The HTC Hero does all of those remarkably well. The only thing I don't like about it - and I'm pretty sure I can turn it off but I'm strikingly unmotivated to read the manual and figure it out - is the reverb from the keys when I type. And, really - if that's all the problem is - I'm living a pretty good life.  Read more >

  9. So This Is What 40 Feels Like

When I was a kid, I thought 40 was as close to death as one could be without actually being, you know, dead.  Read more >

  10. The Soccer Game That Stopped My Heart

I still remember the end-of-season tournament for 12-year-old Mackenzie and her advanced-level soccer team. It consisted of two games on Saturday -- 9 and 5 -- and at least one game on Sunday -- two if they won the first three games. I love the team she plays on: the girls are friendly and warm and the parents kind and inviting. Her coaches have taught her a LOT, and this team has really been a great fit for her.  Read more >
