  1. Picking up hitchikers

It's not as if we needed another pet. We already have cats and a pond full of fish, the occasional insect pavilion (ladybugs to hatch, caterpillars to metamorphize, whatever the kids catch and bring in for temporary housing). But when a little fuzzball of a kitten found us on our first rest stop some 200 miles from home, how could we just leave it behind? (Read more...)  Read more >

  2. Friendly Folks on the Road

An interesting thing happens when we leave California - people are friendly. I don't mean your everyday California friendly. I mean, happy to have jobs no matter how menial, openly expressive, welcoming to strangers, curious about the people around them. They make eye contact. The girls noticed this on last fall's big adventure. One year later and in an economic world apart that observation still holds true. (Read more...)  Read more >

  3. Roadside Assistance

We were on our way home from running errands when I noticed a small sedan parked cattywompus in the traffic triangle. At first, I drove by, but as I passed I eyed the situation and determined this poor guy was pretty much beside himself trying to figure out what his next option was. I made a U-turn, pulled into the triangle and asked if he needed help or a phone or anything. (Read more...)  Read more >

  4. Touring a Nuclear Power Plant

Within half an hour's drive of our house is Diablo Canyon Power Plant, a nuclear facility that generates about 18,000 gigawatt hours every year. Need some perspective? According to the Energy Information Administration, the average American home uses 936 kilowatt hours per year. If my math and reasoning skills aren't completely screwed up (which is quite  Read more >

  5. Extracting DNA from a Kiwi

Thanks to my life-long friend, now a chemistry professor, the girls and I have an inexhaustible source of science answers, projects and ideas. Want to know what pure carbon looks like? Call her. Want to know why something works the way it does? Call her.(Oh, sure, we could look it up online or in a book. But any excuse to call a friend is a good excuse, right?)  Read more >

  6. American Girls

As our school year began this year, the girls got really into dressing up for the first day. Somehow, the concept was different for them! Read more...  Read more >

  7. Charitable Deeds - WHAT was I THINKING!?

It started with simple questions: Am I helpful to others? Do my deeds make a difference? Am I bettering my community? Sure. I must be. Right? Only way to tell - keep track of my deeds. And, for good measure, post it for the world to see to keep me on track. We began with a bang - quilts and food banks, cleaning out our closets and sharing our extra with those who had less.  Read more >

  8. No Texting, No Phoning - Keep Your Eyes on the Road

One of my aunts sent me this link. (I originally posted it on this blog, but since it auto-started, it disrupted other processes here. Just follow the link if you'd like to view it). I thought, particularly given how many people not only TALK on the phone while they drive, but who actually send and receive TEXT  Read more >

  9. Making Plastic from Milk - A Homeschooler's First Day Back to "School"

No two days are alike at Best Family Academy - our little corner of the academic world. Here's a look at today, our first day back after our first summer vacation, a peek at what this year may hold.  Read more >

  10. One-Minute Blogger: Monster

One of the distractions I discovered on the Internet is one of my favorite blogs: The One-Minute Writer. Each day, the blog owner posts a subject. Click on 60-second timer then tap away at the keyboard until the gentle buzzer sounds. (Don't forget to turn your speakers on first.)  Read more >
