  1. What do Daddies do?

I am currently in the process of adopting as a single woman, and my future child may never have a Daddy.  I haven't completely ruled out the possibility of getting married someday in the future - I have an aunt who got married for the very first time in her early sixties, so I know it can happen - but it's just not super high on my priority list at the moment.  Read more >

  2. What's age got to do with it?

Back in 2006, I decided that it was time to finally do something about the 40 pounds I had gradually put on over the course of the previous ten or so years. One of the main reasons it suddenly seemed much more urgent to lose the weight is that I had just recovered from skin cancer. The extra 40 pounds probably hadn't caused the cancer, but it certainly hadn't helped the situation. I was determined to get my health back on track and losing weight was an obvious place to start.  Read more >

  3. Summertime Public Service Announcement

On Friday I saw my dermatologist for my annual skin check. Everything looks good.  I go to the dermatologist every six months or so at this point, with the skin check once a year. For a while I was seeing him every two or three months.  In 2006, I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma - skin cancer - so I take my appointments with the dermatologist very seriously.  Read more >

  4. Now I've heard everything

One of the things I do in my job is to manage a computer learning center. We have free open access to computers with Internet connections, and a group of volunteers who teach basic computer classes and do some tutoring. Since we're open during business hours, most of the people who use the center are unemployed for one reason or another.  Read more >

  5. Peace Pebble

I recently applied to a graduate certificate program in Dispute Resolution at UMass-Boston.  Part of the application process was writing two short essays about how I have found myself in the role of negotiator or mediator in my recent employment, and how the program will help my employment. There are definitely things that I have to negotiate or mediate in my job right now, especially since I supervise people as part of my job, and I am enrolling in the program as one of the steps in my plan to escape the daily nine-to-five grind.  Read more >

  6. Fourth of July Memories

When I was a kid, the 4th of July was a big deal. Our house was one of three or four hotspots on the block, where kids and adults congregated to watch the show and enjoy the festivities. Sure, there was barbecued chicken and potato salad and beer and sitting on the stoop with the neighbors, but the main event was definitely the fireworks.  Read more >

  7. Blind Spot

On Saturday, my friend Pat invited me to go with her to a party. It was a fundraiser for the Pan-Mass Challenge, which raises money for cancer research at Dana-Farber, and it sounded like fun - dinner, music, prizes for the best hat and the best shoes, and all for a good cause - so I agreed to go. I had no idea until Pat asked me to go that I had become such a cranky hermit. Notice in the paragraph above that I didn't immediately say "yes," I had to come up with all the reasons that it might be a good idea to go (good cause, dinner, music, prizes).  Read more >

  8. Other People's Kids

Yesterday I was talking to one of my staff, and she commented that she had noticed how good I was with all the kids at our GED graduation on Monday night. She asked if I had any kids of my own, I said "no" but then ended up telling her about my plans to adopt - I am not good at keeping things to myself, I would much rather tell people what is going on in my life than keep it a secret.  Read more >

  9. What a difference a penny makes

I've noticed recently that I have a very strong aversion to paying $4 a gallon for gas, and I've managed to avoid it so far. Most gas stations in this area are selling gas for $4.05, $4.09, even as high as $4.15 in some places, but there are still a few that are at $3.99 and those are the ones that I make sure to patronize. I really don't think it's about the money, it's something about the thought of paying that particular price for a gallon of gas.  Read more >

  10. I think my scale is trying to mess with my head!

Call me paranoid, but I think my bathroom scale is trying to mess with my head. And, you know, just 'cuz you're paranoid doesn't mean the inanimate objects in your house AREN"T trying to conspire against you!  Read more >
