NurseBridgid

I am an Advanced Practice RN, Certified Personal Trainer, and all around healthy gal! Friends/family ask me medical/health questions all the time, and seeing as I am always reading Nursing, Medical, Nutrition, and Health journals, I usually have a strong opinion. I know that there are tons of trends out there, in regards to health, that the “news” will report as the next “big thing” in healthcare and I like to read up about these things, in scientific journals and get the real deal and spread the info. I also have found that a lot of my friends/family have similar questions, so I thought that the general population might be interested to!! If there is something that you are interested in, that I haven’t discussed or delved into enough, feel free to email me!! Also any suggestions I make are just that, I do not know YOUR specific medical history or needs, so please discuss with your MD/DO/APRN before changing your diet/lifestyle/etc. Ask me ANYTHING! NurseBridgid@gmail.com

Tick Repellents for Humans and Dogs: Made at Home!

After writing about Lyme Disease and the transmission, I thought that I should also share some alternative tick repellents that you can make at home that are chemical free, as opposed to those that are costly, based off of chemicals, and can be ruin your clothes….and get all over the house (especially with pets!!) Here are a few tick repellents that you can make at home, and these primarily are for ticks and may/may not prevent against fleas and mosquitos, but so wo...more

Lyme Disease: What you NEED to know

Lyme disease is a bacteria infection, Borrelia burgdorferi, which commonly spread through bites from tiny ticks, most commonly the deer tick in North America and Europe, as the deer ticks.  Living in areas with lots of tall grasses and woods puts you at high risk, even if those areas are by the ocean; many times people feel like ticks cannot live near the ocean…but they can, so you need to be careful even in tall marsh grasses....more

Beware: Heroin now has a Higher Risk of Death

Heroin, for a long time, has been one of the most addictive street drugs available. With large numbers of users, a high rate of addiction, and a low rate of recovery, it is feared by many, but there is now a new reason to be fearful of the drug: it’s being laced and now has a higher rate of overdose. What’s the scoop?...more

In Honor of BV Awareness Day: Is it an STD?

Bacterial Vaginosis, more commonly referred to as BV, is the most common vaginal infection in women, and despite the fact that you can get it after having sex with a new partner, it is NOT a sexually transmitted disease; your new partner doesn’t infect you.  I can’t tell you how many times women have gone screeching into their GYN’s office freaking out that they got an STD because something smells funky down there (which is a good practice to have, btw) but BV isn’t an STD and you don’t need to trash your new partner all over town about it!...more

Is that a Zit, Cyst, or Furuncle??

I am sure that many of you have seen some of the videos on YouTube with people “popping” enormous “zits” with handfuls of pus come out. Despite the allure and excitement that all of you seem to have with these videos, they are actually not zits…most often they are furuncles!  And, again, I totally get the excitement of wanting to squeeze those suckers, they should actually be seen by an HCP and treated.  How do you know the difference between a zit, cyst, and furuncle?...more

You Don’t Believe in Vaccinations? You Might Want to Rethink that.

Measles outbreaks have been on the rise, after the virus was nearly eradicated in the United States, in 2000. Mostly these infections are on the rise because of people choosing not to give vaccinations to their children, for whatever reason. Measles is a very serious virus, and it is most dangerous to children under the age of 5, and as more and more children have been vaccinated worldwide, the rate of death from measles dropped off, but it is now becoming more of a threat....more

Can You Live Off of Soup Alone?

There are so many different soup “diets” talked about, and people make claims of losing tons of weight and maintaining the weight loss by basically only eating soup. I’ve been asked if this is healthy, and if you truly can live off of a diet like this without missing any key nutrients and vitamins. The Scoop on Soup:...more

Is Quorn™ Really Healthy?

Many people ask me about Quorn™ and whether I think it’s healthy or not. The first time I heard about it, I had no idea what the person was talking about and had to do some research. Once I looked into it, and started asking around, I realized it is much more popular than I had imagined, and it kind of made me feel like I was living under a rock. I was a little shocked at all the controversy here in the US over this mycoprotein meat substitute though....more
