Today is National Missing Child's Day. It's also the 33-year anniversary of the day Etan Patz went missing as he walked to school by himself for the first time. This May 25 dawns differently than in years past, because a suspect is now in custody for the disappearance and murder of Etan Patz, having confessed to the horrific crime that changed how we dealt with missing children in the United States. Pedro Hernandez is now in custody, awaiting arraignment this morning.  Read more >

  3. What Did You Learn at a Previous BlogHer Food Conference?

    BlogHer Food

In two weeks, food bloggers and lovers from all over will gather in Seattle for BlogHer Food '12. It's hard to believe it's really almost here! The excitement is continuing to build among our attendees and speakers, and we're getting excited right along with you. This week, for our bite-sized interview question with some of our speakers, I decided to ask a question that might be in the minds of people who have never attended a BlogHer Food conference before: What's something you have learned at a previous BlogHer Food conference?  Read more >

  4. A Few BlogHer Food Speakers Dish On Their Favorite Seattle Food Spots

    BlogHer Food Bites

The countdown to BlogHer Food '12 continues and so does our series of interviews with our amazing speakers. This week I asked the question that I know is on everyone's mind: What's your favorite food spot in Seattle? We asked some speakers who live in and around the Seattle area, of course. I also phrased it as such -- food spot -- in case someone wanted to give some outside-the-box food places in their recommendations. I was right to do that and you'll have to read on to see why.  Read more >

  5. Our Mother's Day Gift to You: Beautiful Words

    Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day! I hope that today you are treated with love and respect, that you are cherished for the wonderful mom you are, for all the work that you do, for the way that you love your children. I hope you get to spend the day doing whatever it is you want to do, whether that's to rest in quiet or to be surrounded by the noise and chaos of mothering. Today, as we finish up our More than Mother's Day celebration, I thought I'd bring you six quick links to six beautiful posts so maybe you can get a little blog reading in on your special day as well.  Read more >

  6. A New Appreciation for My Own Mom

    three generations

Mother's Day is great time to reflect on our own mothers -- so of course we thought featuring a post in our More than Mother's Day celebration that does just that would be a great idea. Becoming a mom myself allowed me to see my own mom with new eyes. Exhausted, sleep-deprived, eye-gunk-still-present eyes, but new eyes all the same. Sometimes we are filled with compassion for what we put our moms through and sometimes we realize that maybe we weren't as bad as we seemed at the time. It varies for each of us, but becoming a mom gives us insight to our own moms.  Read more >

  7. Something Surprising I Learned from Food Blogging

    BlogHer Food '12

A month from today, BlogHer Food '12 will be winding down in Seattle. Can you believe it? We hardly can! There's just so much to do between now and then -- which includes registering for this amazing conference if you haven't yet done so! We're still working to bring you some interesting, bite-sized interviews from our amazing speakers every week, and this week I stepped outside of the food box and asked a thought-provoking question: What's one surprising thing you learned via food blogging? The answers are as unique as the bloggers, which is always a treat.  Read more >

  8. Let the Wild Rumpus Continue: Celebrating Maurice Sendak's Life

where the wild things are mural

Today Maurice Sendak -- author and illustrator of many beloved childrens' books -- passed away at the age of 83. I will be honest and say that I didn't know he was still alive. I figured that an author that had written a book that my mother read as a child and passed on to me which I, in turn, passed on to my sons would surely not still be with us. I had built him up to be something bigger than life and, as such, other-worldly. I am left feeling sad that I didn't have my sons send some fan mail as they fell in love with the book over the past six years. On the other hand, they say that many creative types -- authors and poets and artists -- don't ever see true appreciation for their life's work. I hope Maurice knew how much children and adults alike loved his work.  Read more >

  9. Photography: Tips for Shooting Fast Movers

    dandelions and spiderwebs

What's the most ordinary flower you can think of? In fact, what's the most ordinary weed you can think of? Dandelions, right? What's beautiful about dandelions? To a child... everything.  Read more >

  10. We're Best Friends -- For Now

    best friends

As we continue our More than Mother's Day celebration, I think celebrating the relationships that we have with our children (or our own mothers) is important. They're complex at times, I'll be the first to admit that. However difficult the teen and young adult years might have been, I adore the relationship I have with mom now. Similarly, as much as my sons make me want to put in ear plugs, I cherish the "I love yous" and little moments with them that are building our relationship now. I think those little moments with our little ones are key in that future relationship, so I adored the post that Tracy at Sellabit Mum submitted.  Read more >
