  1. Our Not So Happy Valley...

You knew it was coming. (I just can’t keep my mouth shut.) I have been a teacher for 24 years. I have been a mother for 22 years. I have been a person with a beating heart for 52 years. I have had a conscience and a high level of empathy for at LEAST 30 of those years. (Let’s just forget about those teenage years, shall we?) As a teacher, mother, and most importantly a person who CARES for the welfare and well being of children, I am both horrified and heartbroken over what is transpiring tonight over there in the happiest of valleys.  Read more >

  2. The Kid is not a Field of Daisies

I like happy endings. I like to know that even when the going gets tough, the people I am reading about will end up in a field of daisies, with a picnic lunch and the knowledge that what lies ahead will be full of roses and unicorns. The Kid is not that kind of story.  Read more >

  3. It couldn't have happened at a better time!(aka back to school...)

Well, it’s that time of year. (Parents, you know what I’m talking about!) It’s the time of year when parents of school aged children are doing the happy dance! Oh, I know the happy dance- I’m doing the happy dance myself! I might be the teacher, but I am also a mom. The happy dance comes at the end of a long, fun-filled summer- a summer filled with wet bathing suits, mildewed beach towels, empty wallets, fresh cut grass tracked across your hard wood floors, endless sleepovers, pool dates, golf dates, play dates and movie dates.  Read more >

  4. Put A Discovery of Witches on Your Summer Reading List. Now!

I was thrilled to be asked to review books as part of the BlogHer Book Review team (at least that's what I like to call it) and was even more excited to get my hand on A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  Read more >

  5. No more pencils, no more books. But plenty of tears.

I spent an inordinate amount of time this morning, on our last day of school, putting on my make-up. I shouldn’t have bothered. In our elementary school have some wonderful traditions for the end of the year. One of them is somewhat new, and was brought to us by some young and amazing fifth grade teachers.  Read more >

  6. He Was Sitting Right on the Couch With Me, Enjoying Ms. Bennet and Mr. Darcy

I was a bit skeptical about what A Jane Austen Education by William Deresiewicz might be -- I was sure that I did not want to be lectured to, and I didn’t want to feel that I was sitting in a college auditorium listening to someone drone on and on about literature. But Deresiewicz didn’t bore me, and in fact, he inspired me to look at a story from many different angles, and perspectives.  Read more >

  7. Caleb's Crossing is an Emotional Roller Coaster

I was a bit intimated when I saw the words “winner of the Pulitzer Prize” at the top Geraldine Brooks' book Caleb's Crossing. Typically I shy away from authors that I feel might intimidate me, but in this case I am thrilled that I took a chance and read this novel. Ms. Brooks’ ability to paint incredible pictures with her words made this book one I couldn’t put down.  Read more >

  8. Some lessons cut like a knife.

I started the year with 20 students of varying ability, age and ethnicity.       Read more >

  9. We really can make a difference. But only if we stick together.

    apple and books

I hear and read here and there, that people think that teacher’s have it easy. They spout about the three months off during the summer, and other various things that they think make out job easy.  Read more >

About Me:

I am a teacher, a writer and a very busy mother of three. I graduated from University of Oregon with a degree in Journalism, and then from San Diego State University with my Teaching Certification. I love my crazy family, my loud barking dogs, and the fact that I never know what tomorrow will bring.

An interesting fact about me: I used to be a private investigator in California.  Then I decided to try something really challenging, and decided to become a teacher.
