  1. Teaching media literacy in a community where media is limited

That will be my daunting task if I choose to accept a teaching position with a small religous school for the 2011/12 school year. The families do not have televisions at home, Internet is quite closed, and when movies are watched they are generally informative rather than entertaining. And my challenge is to meet all of the provincially mandated requirements for course completion while a big part of the English courses that I will be teaching involves the understanding and use of technology and other media.Should be interesting! How would you go about this task?  Read more >

  2. Do you believe in external reward systems?

Do you offer external rewards to children as a way to change behaviour?A recent conversation over at Leading from the Heart has led me to express how I really don't believe in external reward systems as a way to shape behaviours. I'm wondering what others think. Here is some of what I think:I do not find value in placing marbles in jars, in particular virtual ones!  Read more >

  3. Marble Jar: Goal setting app review

A representative from Marble Jar sent me an email about 2 weeks back asking if I could review their new app for the iPhone and iPad. After a bit of back and forth getting me a promo code for the app and my little holiday to beat the heat with Jack in my parents’ air conditioned home, I am back at home and ready to write the review.I’m writing this as I play with the app on my iPad. I don’t have an iPhone so this review will focus on the iPad experience.  Read more >

  5. What exactly do we mean by using technology in education?

**This post was written as a follow-up to Technology & Education - your thoughts? **What do you think of when you hear the words technology and education? Or technology in schools? For some, it has to do with the superficial use of computers in school: using a word processer instead of writing and then handing in a printout of what was written, watching a PowerPoint slideshow about a specific topic on an interactive white board, and playing computer games when work is complete.  Read more >

  6. Technology and Education: Your Thoughts?

Wondering if anyone else here is interested in the many conversations - ongoing since I don't know when, at least since I began blogging in 2007 - around educational technology. One recent site of this conversation is over at Connected Principals with Gerald Aungst's post: Why “I Don’t Do Technology” Isn’t AcceptableAs always, I'm taken with the polarized argument. It seems as if you either use tech in teaching or you don't. And if you don't you are a bad teacher.  Read more >

  7. What is literacy?

I am deeply involved in a conversation on my blog and others around literacy. Though I use digital technologies in my teaching, learning, and day-to-day communications, I have a discomfort, an unsettled feeling when I hear others refer to digital literacy as the dominant literacy of today (initially spurred by this thesis proposal). And when I read statements like:  Read more >
