  1. a day in a jungle life

Most days we wake up sweaty with the sun, the humidity isn’tquite as striking as it used to be and it pleases me to realize we are growingaccustomed to the weather here.  I wakeup and put the kettle on for coffee, there is no creamer here but we do havefresh milk.  J is usually up and headedover to our land where he will spend the day planting trees or chopping downtall grass sometimes with a machete. Everyone here uses a machete and many have the scars to prove it, theycan be unwieldy little buggers and as such M and I keep far,  Read more >

  2. bird by bird

We've been living in the jungle for awhile now, time for the newness to wear off and the reality to set in.  I find myself equaly dismayed and amazed that we live in a rural part of a developing country. On my better days I am in awe of the natural beauty, the simple lifestyle, the focus on community.  On my lesser days I am consumed by heat and bugs and dirt.    Read more >

  3. jungle, interrupted

A few days after my last post our lives turned upside down.  My partner suffered a terrible kidney stone attack and as a result needed to pursue medical care at the local hospital. We endured a rather terrifying ER (if you can call it an ER which in the middle of the night with no doctors on duty would be kind of a stretch) visit that finally resulted in us learning of a potential underlying medical problem.  Plainly stated, after 24 hours of waiting the MD there suggested he had cancer and said that if we had a way to get back to the States we'd be better served by the technology there.  Read more >

  4. Reality Bites

We've been here for six weeks now, six weeks of adjusting, of figuring out the cheapest markets and how to make my own bread. Finding a balance and a almost comfort level not only for myself but for my child. I wash clothes nearly by hand and hang them on a line. We compost everything and use dry beans for cooking, a process I'm slowly figuring out mostly because I need to plan ahead. We don't have a TV and I have to travel into town and pay to use the internet to write this post.  Read more >

  5. Welcome to the Jungle

After more than four years of planning we are finally here. J came before us, driving from California and the length of Mexico, a trip that went without a hitch. M and I followed two weeks later, our flights uneventful but unnerving, we are leaving the country on a one way flight.  Read more >

  6. Jumping into the void: Moving to the jungle

The first question I am asked when people hear of our plans is "what company will you work for?" and when I respond with "actually, we don't have jobs but have worked for four years to save a bit of money. My goal is to become involved in regional community development efforts but it's impossible to know if we'll be successful." the response is a mix of shock and perhaps a touch of awe.  We didn't plan to move in the middle of a recession but here we are, leaving stability at a time when many in our country are struggling immensely.  Read more >

  7. The middle way - or how we decided to move to the jungle

It all started almost five years ago. Newly pregnant and stuck on a deserted island, not trapped but by choice, on a vacation of sorts. We made friends in candlelight, the electricity on the island shut down at dark and the only place to go was the common room of the guesthouse. They were there with a deck of cards and we had a flashlight and we played games late into the night.  Read more >

About Me:

I've been blogging for over two years at one plus two http://droolstreet.blogspot.com as well a frequent contributor at MOMocrats. After more than a decade working in domestic poverty and homeless issues my family is heading off to live in the jungle in Central America.  There are a million things we don't know and only four or five we do, so come along as we figure out how to create a new life, bugs included.
