  1. Too Busy for Chores

My family members and I had an interesting debate on Thanksgiving.  We began to discuss the responsibilities our respective children had at home.  I was shocked to discover that many of my older neices and nephews were not required to do consistent chores because they were so busy with sports and other extracurricular activities that their parents felt they didn't have time to do chores and keep up with their school work.  My kids are 11, 7, and 7.  They are expected to do daily chores and keep up with their schoolwork.  My kids are also very active.  they are  Read more >

  3. Dissertation Update

So I originally started this blog to chart my attempt to finish my dissertation project.  Well, its been several months and I have not really made much progress.  Today I actually emailed my advisor and let him know I wanted to discuss my dissertation project.  Now this may seem simple but I have a tremendous amount of anxiety related to my dissertation.  Let me provide some background.  I originally tried to defend my dissetation about nine years age.  Yes , you read it right--9 years.  After a relatively successful graduate school tenure, I failed my dis  Read more >

  4. HIV/AIDS 2009 Prevention Conference

So I just returned from the 2009 National HIV Prevention conference in Atlanta and I am reflecting on a number of interesting facts that I picked up at the conference.  First of all Magic Johnson was the main speaker for the opening night.  He was wonderful.  If you have never heard him speak he is very personable.  He walked up and down the aisles while speaking allowing people to take his picture and to also take pictures with him while he spoke.  This was very interesting because people were hell-bent on getting his picture even if they had to disrupt the confere  Read more >

  5. Domestic Violence- What Should One Really Do

I am definitely in the midst of a surreal experience.  Here I am a Domestic Violence advocate and treatment provided with years of counseling under my belt, and a minister with I thought a prestty strong understaning of scripture; but when my sister's husband called me after a huge domestic situation her and my sister had just experienced, I think I flubbed my lines.  He called w/ a compelling story of my sister's inability to understand him and how hard it is to deal with her and my neice and nephew.  He described a situation that resulted in my 17 y/o nephew and he in a nose-to-nose c  Read more >

  6. Balancing Safety With Support

I spent the last couple of days hoping against hope that the Jennifer Hudson story would not develop into a tragedy beyond comprehension.  Like a lot of you I could not stop constantly checking for updates to the story while becoming increasingly despondent as the story emerged.  This was particularly poignant for me as a manger of domestic violence programs for a non=profit that specializes in addressing the speicifc needs of women.  Lately myself and my colleagues have been involved in a never ending discussion of how to provide suport for dv victims while still dealing with some of th  Read more >

  7. Is God already defined or subject to novel definitions

I read an interesting story today about a priest who publicly denounsed prop 8 by admitting his own homosexuality.  Ultimately he was removed from his position by officials of the catholic church.  This story of course was fascinating but I have to admit the resultant commentary was more intrigueing.  Bascially a number of the comments both in support and in opposition of his position made references to their feelings regarding what God or Jesus would say or do regarding the issue.  I was struck by the divergent opinions regarding what God or Jesus would say or do and the seemingly abso  Read more >

  8. Permission to Vent

I just read O magazine (I typically enjoy most of the magazine).  Anyway Marth Beck wrote a column advising people to go on a vent fast.  She gave a bunch of reasons why this might be helpful the most important being that being a person who constantly whines about stuff makes you a not so great individual.  I have been struggling with this issue for a while.  jUST TO LAY B  Read more >

  9. Dissertation Lady

Several years ago while participating in a treatment case conference, I and my fellow clinicians encountered a client who was stuck in a dissertation rut.  The lady had completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in her chosen field but could not complete her disseration.  As future Ph.D.'s we all smugly analyzed why she couldn't just get over it and get her disseration done.  We all secretly habored anxiety of having the same thing happen to us but outwardly we passed judgement on her lack of discipline.  Well here I am 10 years out and still I have not completed my Ph.D.  Read more >

About Me:
I am a thirtyish mom of 3 who is currently enjoying her fifteenth year of marriage.  I am an avid reader of anything I find enjoyable.  I probably don't read as much of the good stuff as I should but I am semi-rebellious that way.  I am in the mental health field w/ some major unfinished goals.  I am opinionated but careful where I let my ideas flow.  I love to laugh and I love life.  I have very firm beliefs but I love to find out what makes others tick.
