  1. Remember the old IBM commercial with Avery Brooks asking, "Where are the flying cars? I was promised flying cars"? And then he concludes, "You don't need flying cars" because you've got the Internet. Apparently the company Terrafugia disagrees, and so, it's offering a flying car for sale.  Read more

  2. This could be a horrible thing. This post may be the proverbial train wreck the curious must watch--an opinionated heterosexual writing about a controversial topic deemed "queer," as it relates to the sensibilities and politics of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities.  Read more

  3. In the fallout of Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his staff's impolitic comments published in a magazine article, President Barack Obama today accepted the general's resignation. He announced his decision from the White House Rose Garden as the media anticipated the general would be fired. The president said:  Read more

  4. In a special report entitled "No Kids Allowed" at TampaBay.com, the website of the St. Petersburg Times, women come forward and tell unsettling stories of their lives working for the Church of Scientology's religious order, the Sea Organization. The women began working for the church in their teens during the 1990s in exchange for food, clothing, shelter and medical care. They devoted themselves to performing whatever tasks deemed necessary to furthering church goals, and anything that interfered with that work was considered a distraction that must be eliminated, including children. Some of these women were coerced to have abortions, they tell the Times.  Read more

  5. Calculating the rise and fall of science fiction books, television shows, and movies, I've determined the obvious. Science fiction is no longer dismissed easily as distractions for geeky misfits or as fanciful tales for children, and that may be because the world's observed science fiction over the years become science fact. Yes, my dear Virginia, humans are near designing artificial life on laptops from the comfort of their homes.  Read more

  6. If you should find yourself falsely accused and facing prison time or worse -- in prison serving time for a crime you did not commit or for a crime you committed but received an excessively harsh sentence -- you'll need a good attorney. Almost as much as an attorney, however, you may need social activists who understand social media to take up your cause. That's what the Gray-Haired Witnesses and other activist groups have done for two sisters, Gladys and Jamie Scott. They've taken up the cause of seeing the women freed from prison.  Read more

  7. If you watched CNN last night and the night before, you may have seen Anderson Cooper's interviews with some of the workers who survived the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that BP leased from Transocean in the Gulf of Mexico. You may have been shocked to learn that BP appears to have put saving time and money ahead of saving human lives. I wasn't.  Read more

  8. Thank you, South Carolina and Republican state Sen. Jake Knotts. You've introduced some people in America to another racial slur, one generally reserved for Arabs, Sikhs, and sometimes African-Americans, too: "rag head." That's what you called your fellow Republican and female gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley -- who's leading in the South Carolina polls.  Read more

  9. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer met with President Barack Obama at the White House today regarding Arizona's controversial new immigration law. The meeting has been likened by national news outlets to everything from a Cold War summit to a "face-off."  Read more

  10. What were you doing in history class the day your teacher covered the Korean War and why should we care that North Korea told its military to prepare for war against South Korea this week? Do you need your coffee before you answer that question? You're not alone.  Read more
