  1. Do You Say "Minorities" or "People of Color?"

    Protesters

Recently, the latest Census report revealed that the majority of babies born in the U.S. are non-white, which has prompted the question: does it make sense to keep using the term “minority” to describe blacks, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans?  Read more >

  2. Cory Booker is the Distraction From Obama’s Real Issues: Romney’s Business History at Bain

    Cory Booker

It IS about the economy, Cory Booker and everyone else. Recently, the Obama campaign went on the offensive, with the angle that Mitt Romney’s business success doesn’t necessarily translate into best practices for the government. The Obama camp released a series of Romney Economics videos focusing on the real people who lost their jobs –- and entire towns brought to a standstill -- when Romney’s private equity firm, Bain Capital, bought out and liquidated local businesses such as the Ampad paper factory in Marion, Indiana.  Read more >

  3. Priscilla Chan is Mark Zuckerberg’s College Sweetheart, Not Asian Fetish

    Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan

Usually, when a couple gets married, they are showered with gifts and well-wishes. Not that Mark Zuckerberg is known to do anything the conventional way.  Read more >

  4. Politicians: It's About Fixing Education, Not Just Teacher Appreciation

    Cookies for teachers

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, the time of year when parents are baking cookies, writing cards, and filling gift baskets for those wonderful educators who spend nine months out of the year instructing, inspiring and disciplining our youngster. There’s a phrase I hear often from many a harried mom: It’s for the kids. The mantra is repeated as moms and dads organize school fundraisers, volunteer to grade spelling tests, buy reams of paper for cash-strapped schools.  Read more >

  5. Don’t Know Much About Asian American History? Books for Kids

    Japanese American children pledging

The month of May has been proclaimed by Congress as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. And what better time to teach your kids about the history of Asians in the United States? Because most school curriculums contain little – if any – mention of the contributions of and discrimination against Asian Americans. Perhaps you've shared with your children how you or your family members came to America, but this is also a great opportunity to learn about the experiences of other Asians in the United States.  Read more >

  6. Census (and Bloggers) Show Increase in Mixed-Race Marriages, Babies

map of interracial marriage, US Census 2010

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released new statistics on mixed-race families based on the 2010 survey, prompting several news articles about the rise in interracial families.  Read more >

  7. Women of Color: The Silent Victims of the Mommy Wars

woman with stroller in business area

Apparently, only white women get to argue about whether to stay home or seek employment out of the house. That’s the takeaway I got from the online vitriol sparked last week by Ann Romney and Hillary Rosen. It doesn’t matter whether it’s 2012, 1992, or 1972 — the Mommy Wars continue to pit white, privileged women against even more privileged white women.  Read more >

  8. (Updated) George Zimmerman in Custody, Will Be Charged With Second Degree Murder

    George Zimmerman

[Editor's update, April 11: Angela B. Corey, special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case, has announced that George Zimmerman is in custody and will be charged with second degree murder. She is not commenting on Zimmerman's location nor any other facts in the case. MSNBC reports that second degree murder is the highest possible charge that fits the facts known in this case. -- Julie]  Read more >

  9. Hoodies or Hijabs – What’s the Difference? Neither Should Get You Killed

    Hijab photo

A Muslim mother of five was killed inside her home last week, while wearing clothing that covered her head, a note filled with racial slurs left next to her body. Sound familiar? The similarities between the shooting of Trayvon Martin and the bludgeoning death of 32-year old Shaima Alawadi are disturbing. Alawadi’s murder may even be a more blatant hate crime than Martin’s – the mother of five was killed in her dining room, with a note reading  Read more >

  10. Million Hoodie March: “Our Son is Your Son”

    Woman with skittles

Hundreds of people packed New York’s Union Square last night for the Million Hoodie March demanding justice for the death of 17-year old Trayvon Martin, many of them clutching skittles and bottles of iced tea, Martin was when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, who has not been charged.  Read more >
