  1. I'm Going to be a Grandmother--and appreciate my parents even more

I am going to be a grandmother very soon. Our first grandchild. I've pondered all sorts of things in the past eight months or so about grandmotherhood. From how to stop myself from giving too much advice to what Johnny Mac Pippin will call me to all the fun things about having a BABY to spoil again--those things have been examined. What I knew from the moment we knew we were going to be grandparents is that Denise would go for the birth. I couldn't imagine anything else.  Read more >

  2. Melissa Ferrick-Everything I Need in a Musician

We saw Melissa Ferrick in concert over the weekend. This double-header of shows didn't count as our first shows and hopefully not our last.  Read more >

  3. Adrienne Rich and Me.

On my fourth school run of the day, the second of the afternoon, I spent the sunny drive thinking of my poem of earlier in the day and the discussion about it on the previous school run. I was composing "Of Car Rides and Free Verse: A Dialogue" in my head. I rather frequently compose such things in my head-even if they don't always make a page.  Read more >

  4. Trouble...

My daughter stands next to my desk utters those words (the ones that strike fear in a mother's heart.) "I'm having trouble" ... "with line breaks." I sigh with relief.Line breaks! I can tackle those. I thinkI start in my head to talk html, then Stop.  "Line breaks?" "My mentor" (poetry) "says I need to consider line breaks."Oh. THAT kind. I clarify.   She speaks of Sentences. Cringe Fumble (Could we talk  Read more >

  5. Scary Children in Hoodies

I have two children, now young adults who fit the description "scary looking." They often complained about people who walked the other way when they saw them, about people following them to see if they were up to no good. It particularly pained boy child, because he truly is the opposite of scary. Yes, he looks funny with his long hair (sometimes dyed), baggy pants, tattoo on his leg, piercings, and general hangdog walk. He however is about the sweetest, kindest boy you'll ever meet. My decidedly innocuous looking youngest child is far more dangerous.  Read more >

  6. Retro Bridge Luncheons

    Summertime Bridge Luncheon

As a child, I remember my mother holding and attending bridge luncheons. Not often and I had the idea that this was something of the refined past, rather than the present. That didn’t stop me from thinking that one day I’d hold bridge luncheons—serving tea, punch, finger sandwiches, aspics, and generally showing off my lady-like skills. I never learned to play bridge. I’ve never been to a bridge luncheon as an adult.  Read more >

  7. "Brain": Not a Bad Thing for Women

I am reading "Reading Jackie" by William Kuhn. I really just started. I had to stop to blog for a minute.I want to write this while I remember to tell my girls, to tell YOU something important. I don't want to ever hear my daughters say "I don't want to be known as a "brain"." Never.I am sad Jacqueline Lee Bouvier "Jackie" Kennedy Onassis ever thought, much less reportedly said, that she didn't want to be known as a brain. It troubles me that she chose the fashion icon, social skills, wife, and even White House Restoration.  Read more >

  8. Angelina Jolie and Mother Judging

The other day as I waited in the checkout line at the grocery store, I picked up an entertainment rag of a magazine. The cover touted Angelina Jolie as a bad mother--leaving children LOCKED in a hotel room while she went out drinking. The story inside left me aghast. Not because of Angelina Jolie and her supposed "bad mothering" but at the implied judgment of mothers everywhere. Why? Because Angelina Jolie is a mom and a human.Let's look at the shameful things she does as a mother according to what I remember of this fine piece of journalism.  Read more >

  9. The Kid Needs a Break

When Precious premiered, I read a lot of reviews or skimmed them. I knew Push was on our shelf but wasn't completely sure I had read it. I knew the subject matter would be tough.  Read more >

About Me:

I am an internet community zealot. I have worked online since 1995. I have several personal blogs, way too many feeds in my reader.

I am passionate about my family and online community.

I work as a Community Moderator for Mother Nature Network and also work for the BlogHer Publishing Network.

Something that may surprise you about me: I don't really like to cook. I love my hair. I want to be a college football coach.

I always wanted a home birth.

Unsurprising to some but fascinating to others: My competitive streak landed me both of the people I have had long-term relationships with and their birthdays are a week apart.

Our home has pictures of our ex-es...and sometimes those have been on our bedside tables, entertainment center, and refrigerator. Neither of us thought this odd until there was a discussion online somewhere about someone who still had pictures of their ex sitting out.

Assorted Personal Facts:

We have a blended family of six children--from all grown up and married down to middle school aged. My mother lives with us. We have three prairie dogs, a bird (my high school daughter's), a dog (my mother's).
