  1. Food Deserts: How Millions go Without Fruits & Vegetables

    Food Desert

Would you be surprised to hear that many people who actually live where fruits and vegetables are grown in this country, don't have access to fresh produce? It doesn't sound like that could be true, but a recent study on rural health is opening our eyes to just how widespread this problem is.From Howie Blog -- Essentia Health research finds rural residents aren’t eating their fruits and veggies...  Read more >

  2. Breast Cancer Under Age 40: What You Might not Know, and How You Could Help

Although the percentage of women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40 is much lower (only about 7%) than the overall rates of breast cancer diagnosis, sadly, these cancers are often not found in their early stages and can prove to be much harder to treat.  One reason these early onset cancers are more difficult to diagnosis is because the breast tissue of younger women is generally more dense than that of women over the age of 40.  There is also sometimes a "denial" aspect to the early dia  Read more >

  3. Federal Government Rules That Marijuana Has No Accepted Medical Purpose. Really???

    marijuana

I can totally understand why the federal government would have trouble recommending a complete legalization of marijuana (it's a political nightmare), but it just seems blatantly irresponsible to announce that there is NO acceptable medical use for it.  Are they kidding? From the LA Times – Federal Government Says Marijuana Has No Accepted Medical Use…  Read more >

  4. Larger and More Graphic Health Warnings Mandatory on Cigarette Packaging

    Cigarette warning label (screen grab)

Over the last few days, I've been noticing a lot more public service announcements about the dangers of smoking (some of them are so graphic I could barely watch). I'm not a smoker, but I can't imagine a smoker not being scared to death after seeing some of these. And today, the Food and Drug Administration announced that new (larger and more graphic) warning labels will be mandatory on all cigarette packaging. If you haven't seen them yet, this Associated Press news video shows them:  Read more >

  5. Popular Quit-Smoking Drug Linked to 150 Suicides: Is Chantix Worth the Risk?

Could a prescription medication for people who want to quit smoking actually cause them to commit suicide? Well, in at least 150 cases (between 2006 and 2010) the shocking answer is, yes.  Read more >

  6. Media's Effect on Weight Loss Policy

Could the way the media communicates about weight loss actually help stop the obesity epidemic in our country?   Well, it hardly seems possible considering that most of the media coverage either promotes unrealistic body image or perpetuates the stigma associated with being overweight.  A recent Yale study found that online news outlets are the worst offenders.  Read more >

Woman looking in a funhouse mirror

There is a lot of stigma and misinformation surrounding eating disorders. The biggest misconception about eating disorders is that it's somehow the patient's fault but that couldn't be further from the truth. About Me:

I am a 44 year old single mother of two beautiful children; Brian 20, and Nicole 17. Being a mom is the thing I am most proud of; I could sit and talk all day about how much I love my kids, and how great they are. I am a nurse by profession, but unable to work due to some chronic medical problems...you can read more about that at: "Living With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome". Hoping to find a way to support myself and my children without complicating my medical condition, I began writing and blogging.  I have several blogs and you can find links to all of them at catherine-morgan.com -- It makes me so happy to now be able to help promote other women bloggers as a contributing editor for BlogHer.

Something you might not know about me...

Scott Baio (from the t.v. show Happy Days) was my first kiss.
