Here's your Monday reminder - This Thursday is Valentine's Day! Don't ask me what I'm doing, because I don't know. I planned New Year's Eve, so Hunky Actor Boyfriend is in charge of Valentine's Day. Right now, I'm just crossing my fingers that he doesn't have to work, but if he does, I'll guess we'll just pick a different day to be Valentine's Day.
Shelley at Defining Desire knows her V-day is going to be a little different this year:
Normally, my hubby and I celebrate Valentine’s with a dinner out, a nice gift to each other, and maybe an outing the weekend preceding or following Valentine’s Day. But this year is different in so many ways… so, we were just discussing Valentine’s Day last night and how neither one of us has gotten a gift and there is no way we are going out to dinner (especially since we don’t have reservations in the small town we live in). — My hubby learned the hard way about needing reservations on Valentine’s Day when we were dating, but that is another story. Oh, there also is the story when we went on a hike on Valentine’s Day and got lost, but that is another story too. — Back to the point, so how are we going to celebrate this year?
Things are a little busy, busy in Shelley's family's life right now. Remodeling, running their small business, toddlers. Yes, that's plural on the toddlerS. Sounds like her Valentine's Day will be busy, but full of love.
Over at The Cougar's Byte Online (an online publication for Kean University in New Jersey), "KU students share their best and worst experiences on Valentine's Day" in The Good, Bad, And Ugly On Valentine's Day. This one's my favorite:
"February 14, 2007, at 3:54 p.m., is the first day that Jordan ever sent me a message via Facebook and it simply said 'I just have to tell you that you are so beautiful!' So I replied a few hours later and of course said thank you. So that was the pre-beginning of what would begin our conversations via Facebook and eventually our beautiful relationship. Now, February 2008, we will be celebrating our first Valentine's Day together and I'm looking forward to it, not because I want a special gift or anything like that, but simply because I love him so much and I'm so happy that now, a year after he ever said anything to me, we are building a wonderful relationship together!"
I am loving the love found via online social networking. I met Hunky Actor Boyfriend on the Internet! Not to mention so many great friends and colleagues.
Finally, Karen at faded willow shares her non-valentine's day extravaganza (complete with pics of vintage glassware):
I have to admit, I'm not a big Valentine's Day type of girl. It's just so overdone and commercialized, that it doesn't seem special. So, this weekend, Seth and I decided to have a Mid-February-Anti-Winter Doldrums celebration. We went to a huge antique store up in Pennsylvania, followed by a movie and dinner.
Instead of exchanging gifts, we decided to give each other a mini-shopping spree. So, we each brought a crisp $20 with us and exchanged it (to make it official) in the car before we headed inside.
They had a really fun, casual time, which rocks.
Although, really, no matter what you do, or how you feel about Valentine's Day, if you spend it with someone you love, or friends you love, or family you love, that's really what it's all about.

Thanks
For posting this - I completely agree with your sentiment about this holiday. There's no need to feel guilty, or lonely, or above or beneath it.
And love is all around us, in the blogosphere too!
As for me, I'm spending it without boyfriend, he's away for work, and away from friends and family too. Not ideal but I honestly don't mind much - I'm still deciding what chocolaty dessert I'm going to prepare in honor of the day - and I'm taking it to work with me so I don't eat it all by myself!
To love more, and consume less....
I think its important for each of us to remember the essence behind days like Valentine... Love!
I try, and also suggest to everyone, to keep this day simple, and to remember that best is to love more, and consume less....
I have wrote a post about it, promoting handmade gifts instead of the usual chocolat box, flowers, or dinner out:

Virtual Valentines & Kids Freebies on Shaping
Youth...
As I mentioned on Megan's BlogHer post, I spent Valentine's chaperoning a middle-school dance and wow, talk about a living lab for Shaping Youth's endeavors...
I wrote about 'virtual valentines' and how new media and digital offerings can keep us OUT of the 'commercialized chaos' of pink think (pricey ipod nanos and such) and get us back to basics with freebies and 'thinking of yous' via sites to customize your greeting.
My favorite one is the freeware to create your own candy heart jpeg and send it along...very cool. Also, being a wordsmith type, I LOVED the 'chocolate scrabble' site...talk about eating your words! All the links are embedded here on today's post: http://www.shapingyouth.org/blog/?p=1128
