Valentine's Day: Love or Bling, I LOVE It

"Brevity is the soul of lingerie."
--Dorothy Parker

The other day I was out with a girlfriend at the park and we were talking about Valentine's Day, while we pushed our feral short people on the swing.

"Are you going to DO that?" she said, referring to fussing with the holiday at all.

"Yes," I said. I love Valentine's Day. My secret is that I am so corny that we people come into the room, they think about going to the movies or Orville Redenbacher. I don't care. I always have been this way.

"WHY?" she said. "It's just a made-up greeting card holiday!" Her friend, who she thought was too cool for ridiculous stuff like that, was letting her down. I tried to come up with a good reason for my V-Day love.

"But...it's about LOVE, MAAAAN." I figured if I was already embarrassing myself, I might as well go for gold and tack a "man" on there. "Could there be a better thing for a holiday to be about?"

However, for good or ill, in our society, love and Valentine's Day does go hand-in-hand with capitalism. Of course, there are many ways that you can show someone you love them. You can sing them a song, write them a bad poem, or just tell them. Or you can get them, er, Love Rats. I don't know.

I have never had a bad Valentine's Day (yet), but I did have a funny one. I had been dating someone for about four months, and didn't have any expectations about what we were doing for that day. I am not going to force someone to serenade me and shower me with chocolate if they are really not feeling the holiday. He came to the door for our date, which I think was just out to chill dinner.

"Happy Valentine's Day!" he said, and thrust a pineapple at me. At the time, I thought it was quirky-cute. When I got to know him better I begin to suspect that rather than forgetfully arrive empty-handed, he instead stopped at the grocery store. Oh, l'amour.

If you're one of those nerdy history people like me, The History Channel has a cute video on the history of Valentine's Day, if you can get past the cheesy intro, which would like to inform you that Valentine's Day is only for straight people. Ah, well. Some kiddos might enjoy this one. There are many other links there as well.

Here are some other cool articles about the big V-Day:

Silly student video for "Happy Valentine's Day" by Outkast. One of my favorite songs, actually.

Got a Valentine's Day story? Drop me a link. It's about love. Man.

A few years ago, my boyfriend and I went to a Valentine's Day presentation at the Central Park Zoo on homosexuality in the animal kingdom. It started with champagne at the penguin house, and then there was a lecture and slide show. It was really fun, and reminded me how important it is to focus on love.

There are only 2 holidays that i really celebrate - Thanksgiving and Valentines Day. For me, they both have love as the central theme - and food. Everything good has food smack dab in the middle of the celebration.

We started a tradition, when our daughter was old enough to take part, that on Velntine's Day, we leave little notes about surprising things we all love about each other. In the fridge, on the dryer, on the remote control. It's kind of like a giant scavenger hunt - that sometimes goes on for weeks because they don't all get found. But it's fun. And, of course, we buy chocolate.

The other fun thing that Celia and I do is re-imagine the holidays as we want them to be, which some of you know is how TinkerTank was born. Our Cupid is a spunky black girl who is full of mischief and likes to cause bunches to lurch so that should-be lovers will land in each other's lap. If you'd like to meet her, her bio ( http://www.tinkertank.org/ExecutiveTeam/HumanResou... ) is on the TinerTank site.

Hmmm, funny, we didn't make a Thanksgiving character, I'll have to get on that.

Unrelated to anything, I remembered that Amy Reiley has a great cook book and web site about food as an aphrodisiac. Here's a quick interview ( http://justcauseit.com/articles/just-10-questions-... ) with her, she's great. I think I put links to her site at the end, what better way could there be to celebrate Valentine's Day?

Mmmmm, food and love. What time is it? Myles should be home soon..... :)

...but I don't want my kids or partner to feel ignored, so tiny gifts of chocolate DO occur.

My fave gift I ever gave was decades ago, a home-made card. I included a picture of me, decked out, pushing a red rose up my nose. He loved it.

I think the trick is to not give it too much weight, and just have fun with it.
