"Brevity is the soul of lingerie."
--Dorothy Parker
The other day I was out with a girlfriend at the park and we were talking about Valentine's Day, while we pushed our feral short people on the swing.
"Are you going to DO that?" she said, referring to fussing with the holiday at all.
"Yes," I said. I love Valentine's Day. My secret is that I am so corny that we people come into the room, they think about going to the movies or Orville Redenbacher. I don't care. I always have been this way.
"WHY?" she said. "It's just a made-up greeting card holiday!" Her friend, who she thought was too cool for ridiculous stuff like that, was letting her down. I tried to come up with a good reason for my V-Day love.
"But...it's about LOVE, MAAAAN." I figured if I was already embarrassing myself, I might as well go for gold and tack a "man" on there. "Could there be a better thing for a holiday to be about?"
However, for good or ill, in our society, love and Valentine's Day does go hand-in-hand with capitalism. Of course, there are many ways that you can show someone you love them. You can sing them a song, write them a bad poem, or just tell them. Or you can get them, er, Love Rats. I don't know.
I have never had a bad Valentine's Day (yet), but I did have a funny one. I had been dating someone for about four months, and didn't have any expectations about what we were doing for that day. I am not going to force someone to serenade me and shower me with chocolate if they are really not feeling the holiday. He came to the door for our date, which I think was just out to chill dinner.
"Happy Valentine's Day!" he said, and thrust a pineapple at me. At the time, I thought it was quirky-cute. When I got to know him better I begin to suspect that rather than forgetfully arrive empty-handed, he instead stopped at the grocery store. Oh, l'amour.
If you're one of those nerdy history people like me, The History Channel has a cute video on the history of Valentine's Day, if you can get past the cheesy intro, which would like to inform you that Valentine's Day is only for straight people. Ah, well. Some kiddos might enjoy this one. There are many other links there as well.
