Valentine's Gifts For Guys

It's easy to figure out what women might like for Valentine's Day, in my opinion. Flowers, a pretty necklace, chocolate -- there's no end to the things, great and small that women might enjoy receiving from their sweethearts on February 14th. But what about the guys? What do men want? One the one hand, I think we can all well imagine what the gentlemen want -- but I'm talking about something we can wrap up for them. The possibilities are endless, but I've narrowed it down to five choices for you. You're welcome!

A famous ball-park stadium pen. These pens, from Red Envelope, are "Designed to look as smooth and inviting as a brand new bat, each rhodium-plated pen sports a hand-turned wooden barrel, crafted from authentic stadium-seat wood from America's most famous and beloved stadiums. All are engraved with the stadium name and timeline, and arrive with a signed card of authenticity." Nice.

A pair of fabulous earphones. I never think about it much but the guys I live with live for good audio. Bose makes the best earphones in the business...and, chances are, he'll appreciate them.

A beautiful belt is the cornerstone of a great wardrobe. Treat your fella to a belt made by Coach, the belt-makers.

Are you the type to send secret love notes? Give him a set of secret message cufflinks -- they come with a wee container for you to include a tiny love poesy. Sit back and imagine him reading your note in a board meeting.

Is your man a little more traditional? A monogrammed money-clip is always a lovely gift.

Somehow, Valentine's day has turned into the day men shower women with gifts. This year, I think it's time to remember the men!

Can you come up with more unique gifts for the guys?

Candelaria, it's cold outside!  How about red long johns (a "Union suit" as my Papaw called it).  It's not very romantic, but it's warm!  I love your idea about "giving red" and I enjoyed the suggestions that blackbird gave (though the idea of a "moneyclip" makes me laugh ... he'd have to carry money and he only uses debit cards!).  But, I have to go along with Dearest Fatty (can't we call you by another name?) in that we don't exchange Valentine's gifts.  As much as I love to be romantic, Valentine's Day strikes me as one of those "Hallmark holidays."  Romance should be a daily thing, without a special holiday to remind us!

But, blackbird, thanks for all the research.  I'll save the ideas for his birthday!

Depending on the year and finances, I get my husband cologne and something special but always, always I get him something red.  Red boxer shorts (silk one year, cotton another), a red tie, a red cumberbund (sp?) set for the occasional times when he needs to wear a tuxedo.  I'm planning to give: a jar of red M&Ms, red velvet cupcakes (he loves them and I've never made them so I'm researching recipes), and a red beach towel for his annual men's trip to the Vineyard.  Perhaps he'll get red union jack PJs as well.  Think Red.

I like to give "experiences." (You can wrap the tickets or brochure.) This year we are going to the Mark Schultz concert at The Cove in Asheville, which includes a gourmet dinner. My husband is in a praise band at church and also writes Christian music, so it's perfect for him.

...That me and Mr (not) Fatty don't really Do valentines gifts?

Instead we usually get the kids to bed early and cook a really nice meal and snuggle up after to watch a movie. We just don't have the disposable income to buy each other great gifts, so soon after Xmas (and 2 kids bdays!) and have no wish for "nik nacks" that the great red hearted ones pump out for valentines.

Is it your flab or your brain you need to fight? Answers on a postcard please.

My guys would love a Lightscoop!

I bought my honey a Lightscoop = a nifty, low-tech gadget  you slip on your dSLR camera - it bounces the light so you get awesome indoor shots. No more dark shadows, white faces, hot spots, and frightened kiddos. We take tons of pix so this is awesome and it is easy to pop in your bag. We bought ours at Lightscoop.com, but you can also get them at adorama.com for about $20 right now...
