The Vegan Playdate
Last week my 3 year old daughter had a play date. That right there is a recipe for disaster. Aside from the usual play date fears, of fighting, yelling, hair pulling, etc…There is snack time. For a vegan Mom, snack time can sometimes be as scary a child tearing through the house wearing your new shawl as a cape, carrying a delicate family heirloom.
Some kids refuse to eat anything that doesn’t come in a familiar name brand package. And of course whenever I suggest fruit or veggies, my daughter says, “No mommy, I want a real snack!” So on that lovely day, my daughter suggested we make brownies. Being the fun and creative mom I am, (hahaha) I agree and grab one of my Vegan cookbooks and pick the most appetizing (easiest, who am I kidding) brownie recipe. The recipe looked good enough, using applesauce and a little flaxseed and cocoa powder. So into the oven it went. My daughter licked the bowl and spoon clean. Good, I thought the batter is kid approved! Just in case I made a big batch of popcorn. The play date went on better than expected, my 3 year old behaved surprisingly well. The delicious smell of brownies floated through the air as us Moms chatted away. Then snack time approached. Mmmmm, brownies! Not exactly, more like Mmmmm, chocolate chewy bricks. One mom said, “It’s interesting.” A Paula Abdul way of saying, “It’s absolutely dreadful.” The other mom said, “I could probably get used to it.”
Hmmm, yah if I was on Survivor and my other choice was a live dung beetle. The little boy chose his own snack of Raisins after taking a bite. Enough said!
But the popcorn was a big it, and the kids didn’t strangle each other. The brownie recipe may have been an oops, but the kids had fun anyway!
On a side note, that evening, my husband decided to try one. To be fair, I did warn him and tell him the feedback I got over these brownies. He wants one anyway and decides to put the entire brick like brownie in his mouth at once! Now these were hard to chew one bite at a time so you can imagine how he looked, stuffed with chocolate mush. In the process my daughter spilled her water at the table, so my husband the comic that he is, takes the brownie out of his mouth and proceeds to sop up the water with it! Not a good lesson for the kiddos, but hilarious nonetheless!
So my Clever Vegan Mom tip of the week: When trying a new vegan recipe for the first time, always have a back up! For Great recipes visit www.cleverveggiemom.blogspot
