(I know Britney's VMA performance has been discussed to death. I wrote this after seeing only the aftermath, not the original trainwreck.)
I caught most of VH1's Britney's Shocking Year yesterday. I'm big enough to admit that I watch most celebrity gossip/garbage TV. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past twelve months, you're probably aware that Britney's been sort of a one-woman trainwreck. From the excessive partying to flashing photogs, it all seemed to come to a head (okay, pun intended) with Britney's public balding in February.
I missed her "comeback" on the VMAs. (I guess I can't redeem myself by saying I missed the VMAs to watch Rock of Love -- speaking of trainwrecks.) Yeah, it was pretty bad. Also incredibly sad. Even from my never-been-in-the-spotlight place in the universe, I can totally see how that kind of lifestyle can ruin someone. Not the partying, but being thrown into the crazy world of Hollywood at a young age, never having anyone tell you "no." Does it really come as any surprise that one of the biggest songs of the year is called "Rehab?" I wonder what it's going to take before all these "party girls" wake up and realize that self-destruction is not sexy?
It was briefly touched on in the All Access special that Britney's problems could, at the very least in part, be blamed on postpartum depression. Maybe more should be made of that.
I know it's not "cool," but I don't hate any of these Hollywood party girls. Snarking on that kind of behavior just reinforces it, and makes it palatable to non-Hollywood types.
