VIDEO: Bloggers in the News -- Today Show Debates Mommyblogging

Bloggers Jen Singer, Isabel Kallman and Susan Getgood appeared on The Today Show this morning under the topic: "Mommy Meanest? The Dark Side of Mommyblogging."

After The Detroit Free Press piece earlier this week, I recoiled at the headline. Fortunately, The Today Show had Isabel and Susan on live, and the discussion quickly turned from whether or not mommybloggers are catty to a positive discussion of criticizing the idea and not the person (which we heartily support in the BlogHer Community Guidelines) and Blog With Integrity.

I for one, am getting tired of the "mommybloggers suck" headlines. On the other hand, I'm happy to see bloggers featured in the mainstream media and getting the chance to bat back some of these gross generalizations about mommyblogging. What do you think? Is all this coverage of mommybloggers good for the community or bad?

"People are fascinated, intrigued, horrified, appalled and inspired by women who write..."

I had never considered that, but you make a very good case. It will be interesting to see if over time women bloggers remain inspiring, but perhaps less horrifying to some.

I think it's great, learning to discuss - not diss.

I think you are right. It is jealousy. I think the biggest haters on the internet are fans who became jealous over the blogger's success.

The reason behind my theory is that the hate is rarely a generic, "You suck" but often a targeted, "Your child X" and, "your husband Y" and "one time you even Z." And it's obvious that the person spewing the hate has been reading for three or four years.

They must have started reading because they liked the blog. So what causes the outbursts? I think it's that when they started reading, they felt like they could relate to the blogger and now the blogger has a large audience or special opportunities and they say, "Why her? What's so special about her?"

That's just a theory. I don't know how to confirm or deny it because I don't think Anonymous would agree to be interviewed about why she's so vengeful.

The attention to women who blog in general and/or mommy bloggers in particular reminds me of the furor that women writers caused in the 19th century when they started publishing novels, articles, travel memoirs, etc. It's Nathaniel Hawthorne's comment about the "damned mob of scribbling women" but in the context of 21st century technology. People are fascinated, intrigued, horrified, appalled and inspired by women who write, women who have voices and use them. Someone should write an article about this--maybe it should be me!

I am probably going to get slammed by this but I am going to speak the truth. Most women never left high school. Many still get jealous if a friend does better or has more than they do. Thus they must tear them down. When I first started my blog, I commented on another ladies blog.I left a nice comment about how pretty her daughter was in her new dress. My mistake was leaving my blog address on the bottom of my comment. Well that caused a firestorm from said blogger. She wrote the nastiest comments on my blog. To this day, I still don't understand why a blog address caused her to go into a tizzy.

Outside of the blog world women are caddy. I no longer volunteer at my daughter's school because it was reminding all to much of my high school days. The cool mom crowd controlled what mom did what job with volunteering and if you weren't cool you got the worst job(example washing tables after lunch while the cool moms chatted). It was so petty to me, that I decided that it was better for me to avoid than for me to lose it in MY daughter's school. The school is my daughter's not mine and I wish these moms would get that fact!

Women in general are petty in nature. It's in our DNA and there is no denying it. I am not above a good gossip session with the girls nor will I ever be. I just think we need to control it and remember we all have feelings and opinions that we need to respect.

There's always someone who spoils the party. People who say mean things on blogs say them behind our backs too. All we can do is ignore them. They're unhappy souls who don't want anyone else to be happy.

I just voted and the votes came out 40%/40%/20%.

We all see things differently and that's what makes life and blogging so interesting :D

I'm so glad you posted this video.

I saw the tweets about it but when I finally wrestled the remote away from my three year old, the segment was already over.

The way the piece was titled was purely for views. The producers had to know the gist of what Jen, Isabel and Susan where going to say.

For those talented women to spin what could have been a train wreck into a piece about constructive criticism and a supportive community says something about this blogosphere we all share.

Bravo to them. They rawked it.

If the spin of these wonderful, intelligent ladies hadn't gone so well this morning, I might have voted that I was upset. Right now, I can't decide. I'm not pleased. But I'm not upset/angry like I was.

Upset with the headlines and the tone of the stories BUT I also think it gets a good discussion going and it's from those discussions that you get people taking a stand and thinking about the way they comport themselves. So ultimately, a good thing.
