On July 24, 2010, 80,000 people from 197 countries recorded and uploaded video to the Life in a Day video channel. The goal was to create a movie from user-generated content that will debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011.
In July, I wrote a post trying to encourage women to participate in the project. The good news is that the first wave of raw videos have been posted on the project channel. The even better news is that many of the videos submitted are by women.
You can rotate the globe or select a tag that represents the content that you want to view. The globe can be changed into a matrix or grid to select videos or you can search by location.
This is just a small sample of the content I found exploring the gallery. I had a hard time just selecting a few. If the first few videos doesn’t do it for you then take a chance and spin the globe to find another. The editors of the project are continuing to upload user video contributions for public viewing.
A Sense of Place and Time
Mallory, Taylor and Tori wanted to share their last days of being together before going to college.
We just graduated from High School, and are all going on our own separate paths. This is our last summer before college, so we're just trying to spend time together and live it up. I heard about "A Life in a Day" and I, honestly, was so excited. I called Taylor and Mallory immediately and I couldn't stop dancing around. We did a bunch of stuff that day, and I’ll always remember it. We did what we were asked, we answered the questions, and we didn't edit our footage.
The other video I viewed that spoke about being in a certain place was the three people involved with or connected to the Iowa State Prison System.
This is an opportunity to meet a woman serving life without parole, a former inmate and a wife whose husband is in prison. The video is a recording of what these three women were doing on a Saturday in July.
The Search for Value
I suspect Michelle has always got something going every day of the week, not just on this particular Saturday.
In the video, after she shares her busy day, Michelle talks about wanting to make sure that she has contributed or done something that would be remembered after she is gone.
Angela Ortner's video speaks to the question of fear, specifically the fears that used to stop her from living.
Angela's video does tap into the silent fears I think a lot of folks have about living and dying. I commend her for speaking and sharing her fears out loud.
The Loves We Have Stay on Our Minds
People can love many things. I don’t understand Italian, but some how I do understand her love of her man, her cat and her father’s love of being airborne without a plane.
I didn’t know what he does was possible, but you learn something every day; like how the women in his life support and enjoy his love of flight.
Many of us can clearly remember the end of a relationship, but what about the early recollections of just a normal day?
Nick and Emmy share portions of that day and demonstrate that even with video, two people don’t experience exactly the same things the same way.
I could keep going.
My point in sharing these videos is that I believe in the authentic voice of women. I believe we are best equipped to tell our own stories without a product or promotional idea necessarily being attached to that voice.
Video is just another tool to use to communicate who we are, what we are doing and how we are experiencing this moment in time.
