Making my new documentary film series More Business of Being Born, I had the privilege of interviewing some incredible women (Christy Turlington Burns, Alanis Morissette, Cindy Crawford and Gisele Bundchen to name a few) to capture all the intimate details about their children’s births. Admittedly, I am a bit of a birth junkie but really I think that the underlying thrill of birth stories is hearing a woman talk about that indescribable moment when she becomes a mother. Of course, so many women have children without giving birth themselves -- from adoption, to surrogacy, to same sex marriages -- there are many paths to becoming a mother.

For me personally, I could not wait to become a mom. I was twenty-eight years old when my son Milo was born and I was more than ready. From the moment I looked into his eyes, Milo became the center of my world. I was in love. When the time came to give Milo a sibling, I was unprepared for the way motherhood would become even more fulfilling (and challenging) than before. But when my younger son Owen was born, I felt complete.

Now that Milo has entered his teens, I joke that I feel like he’s “broken up with me.” But I am only half-kidding because there is really something so amazing about those early years when your kids think the sun rises and sets with you. Scientists say that the hormones secreted during labor, breastfeeding, or caring for a child actually rewire our brains. (Male brains too!) Part of our design as mammals is that we develop a “mommy brain” to protect and nurture our children, placing their needs before our own. The saying goes that becoming a parent is like living with your heart outside your body. I have found that to be incredibly true. I am a worrier so I can be an anxious mom sometimes, but I am endlessly amazed by my boys. My biggest joy in life is watching them discover their gifts and follow their passions.

Now I am excited to pair up with BlogHer for a contest where you tell us about your journey to motherhood. Please watch the video below and check out how you can participate in the rules below that!

What is the story you tell about becoming a mom? The contest will run from Feb. 6-16, 2012. To enter, please post on BlogHer.com sharing a moment about your own journey to motherhood: An adoption story, a birth story, whatever those events were that made you feel "I'm a mom." Once you have posted, please also tweet it to @BlogHerMoms and @RickiLake and hashtag #mymomstory, but you MUST post to BlogHer.com to enter.

You can submit one entry each day during the contest. BlogHer Moms will be featuring a top-ranking post each day of the contest on the homepage of BlogHer.com and in social media, but the BlogHer Editorial staff will choose the 10 finalists from all the qualified stories we see, so being featured is not a guarantee you'll be a finalist. And I will be picking one winner from the finalists. Please read the full official rules here before submitting your entry.

Winner receives:

  • DVD of the original The Business of Being Born (view trailer)
  • Boxed DVD set including all four episodes of More Business of Being Born
  • Ultrasoft, organic cotton baby onesie featuring "Born Free" print (by Tracy Ginsberg), available in blue, natural, or pink (view colors)
  • SIGNED hardcover copy of Your Best Birth by Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein
  • The National Guide to a Healthy Birth

This has been such a wonderful Journey to reflect back on my two births as well as dealing with PPD and all that has come along with being a mother. I ended up writing 4 stories for the contest. My most recent is a positive birth story called, My Water Birth: http://www.blogher.com/my-water-baby -- I also wrote about the very first time it hit me that I was actually a mom with my first born (that was kind of a rude awakening! LOL!) http://www.blogher.com/my-journey-motherhood-night... -- When I'm not busy being a mom I try to find the funny in all things parenting and write silly Top Ten lists for different mom's blogs. I decided to write one for this contest too to hopefully give a few laughs! http://www.blogher.com/top-ten-things-make-me-say-... -- And finally a reflection on My Journey To Motherhood and the loneliness of dealing with PPD http://www.blogher.com/my-journey-motherhood-0 -- I wanted to thank Ricki Lake and BlogHer for creating such a cool opportunity for all of us busy moms to slow down and take the time to reflect back on our lives as mothers and to remember how it all began and to also remind us how rewarding and wonderful it is, despite the raging tantrum we just dealt with or the baby barf we might have on our shirt at the moment! I have enjoyed reading so many of the entries too! Thank you! :-)

This is the story of the stillbirth of my second son, Sebastian. Not an easy story, but an absolutely defining moment of motherhood for me, and one I'm very grateful for.

I kept putting off having kids because of how much I dreaded being pregnant.

About six years ago, when I began to seriously contemplate the idea of becoming pregnant, I realized I had some pretty cynical thoughts and feelings about pregnancy. “Pregnancy doesn’t look fun at all,” I thought. “You get big, your ankles swell, your body is out of your control, and you can get special diseases!”

I quickly realized that if I didn’t change my outlook, I was simply going to “get through” a couple of pregnant years of my life, and I wasn’t committed to living that way! Having been a leadership and life coach for more than 10 years, I had talked with many people about creating what they wanted, leveraging their strengths, and shifting limiting mindsets. It was time to start practicing what I preached…in the area of pregnancy.

I didn’t immediately know how, yet I knew it was possible and I made a commitment to enjoy my pregnancies to the best of my ability. And, I succeeded! It wasn’t a bump-less journey by any means, yet I went on to love being pregnant.

The lesson I’m thinking about today as I share my past perspectives is one about enjoying the journey. I could’ve gone through my pregnancies just waiting for them to be over. And, as humans, we often live this way. “Life will be better when…” “I just have to get through this then…” I find myself falling into these trains of thoughts from time to time. And I have to remind myself that the time to enjoy and embrace life and do what we love is right now.

Intentionally considering how we can be mothers in our own unique ways and how we can enjoy motherhood to our best of our abilities is a powerful, ongoing inquiry.

Thanks, Ricki and BlogHer, for the opportunity to share the story of my long journey through severe postpartum depression (PPD) to motherhood. I am thrilled to see it featured today (at http://www.blogher.com/today-i-became-mother).

I hope that sharing my experience will help reduce the stigma of PPD and encourage mothers to seek treatment - and help them know that they are not alone in their struggle.

Thank you!

I've been teaching moms how to write about their journey to motherhood for the last few years via The Momoir Project. I will definitely forward this to all of my students - past and present. Writing about our journey to motherhood so often leads to surprising and therapeutic discoveries about ourselves. This is a great idea! Thanks for putting it together!
