(VIDEO) Oprah Talks to Barbara Walters on Friendship, Rumors, Stedman

The rumors are true. Well, one rumor. Everyone cries when they are interviewed by Barbara Walters. Or, at least Oprah did even though she said she really didn't want to do so. In the interview set to air tonight, Oprah let down her guard and talked about herself and her relationships, something we don't always get to hear about as she's usually doing the interviewing.

Barbara asked Oprah about her friendship with Gayle King -- Oprah's long-time BFF. I think Barbara was surprised by the reaction she got as well as the answer. I got kind of misty-eyed, too.

I mean, wouldn't you want your best friend to say this about you?

“She is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend everybody deserves. I don’t know a better person.”

Oprah then explained that her tears were because she has never really said those words to Gayle. Which made me think: Have I told my best friend that I love her? If I have, when was it last that I said so? Have I reminded her? So then I cried, too. Thanks, Oprah.

She then explained that the rumors that she and Gayle are Super Secret Lovers irritates her because, as she she points out, she doesn't lie. Nor would she hide it if it was true. "That's not how I run my life."

Except... she's apparently still with Stedman! Color me shocked! In fact, Barbara was shocked as well. Stedman has been so far off the Oprah-radar for so long that I assumed he was taking underwater basketweaving classes in a far off land.

Okay. I get it. She was tired of the exploitative rumors and stories every time they showed up in public together, so now they just don't show up in public together. That's not a lie. That's just recognizing the issue and owning your privacy. And she says of her "love, lover, partner" this amazing little bit:

"I do not know of another man on this planet who could have lived this life with such dignity."

Wow.

And so, the question is not really whether you're watch the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah tonight (Thursday) at 9pm (though you can tell us if you will), but this: Have you told your best friend how much you love her/him? Have you told your partner how much you appreciate who they have been in your life journey? Don't do it because Oprah did it. Do it because those in your life deserve to hear what they mean to you.

And pass the tissues while you're at it.

In addition to finding Oprah's comments about her best friend so touching I was pleased to hear her talk a bit about why she has not had kids. She has not said much about this over the years.

She basically says she did not have them because her professional life was so demanding it would not have been fair to her kid. Walters even opened up about how she had problems with her daughter, as Barbara was gone a lot when she was growing up.

Oprah’s message is that her professional life really has come first. She might have had a desire to have a child (she was less clear about this), but one thing she did know is that bringing a child into the kind of life it would mean for the child would not have been in the best interest of the child.

A nice example of making a responsible decision about having children!

Loved this interview. My favorite part was when Oprah told Barara that this is what she says to God: "Use Me. Use Me Until You Use Me Up."

Excellent.

I think I take our days for granted too much as well. Thanks for reminding me to quit doing so!

Heh. Broke up with Oprah. Me too. But, similarly, I don't wish her ill, so I was kind of interested in the interview!

And I'm glad! WOO!

I must say that I am astonished by how much she has forced open the world of dialogue for celebrities and the average person and 5-minutes of fame-ers and people in their own home with loved ones. I find her ability to be open and forthcoming about her personal life as astonishing as her ability to keep her everyday private under such scrutiny from the world. Fully actualized doesn't really scratch the surface in my opinion.

I have recently more reconnected with my best friend through Facebook, so we can stay caught up with each other's lives (she lives in Atlanta; about 8 hours away from me). We regularly tell each other how much we love each other. She's almost exactly what Oprah said about Gayle.

And I try to tell my hubby how much he means to me. I've realized this past year how much you need to savor the time you spend with your loved ones. You may not know what day will be your last with them. So make every second count!

I sure would love it if she talked a bit about why she chose not to have children.
We need to hear straight talk from more famous and respected people out there!

I will be watching. I can't get enough Oprah lately. And yes, I try to acknowledge those important in my life as often and as much as I can. I am a big believer in expressing gratitude.

Before I left this comment, I called my best friend -- as a weepy mess -- and told her how much I love her. When she asked what brought this on, I had to sigh: "BlogHer and Oprah."

I broke up with Oprah a long time ago, but I still keep tabs on what she's doing.

I want to thank you for these words:

"Have you told your best friend how much you love her/him? Have you told your partner how much you appreciate who they have been in your life journey? Don't do it because Oprah did it. Do it because those in your life deserve to hear what they mean to you."

I did. And I meant it.

THANK YOU!!!!
:-)

I have to say that make me tear up a little and be really happy that I get to see my best friend in a couple weeks.

Also, I just told my partner how glad I am he's not Oprah.
