Why I'm Celebrating Valentine's Day This Year

I have friends who simply hate, hate, hate Valentine's Day. We all know why, so I won't go into it. I haven't exactly dreaded Valentine's Day in years past as much as dismissed it. It was a day that had nothing to do with me, like Chanukah or Dia de los Muertos. But this year is different. This year there is JW.

Part of me is pretty thrilled that I am a member in good standing of the club of hearts. But I am also sort of sheepish about the whole thing. Oh, ok, I'm disgusted with myself. Me, buy into a fabricated event created by retail opportunists who will make more money in one day than they do all year? Me, embrace the prescribed candlelight, the scramble
for dinner reservations, the hunt for just the right card. Me?? What the heck is going on?

So I've been debating with my contradictory self for the last week or so, my angst increasing as the number of Valentine's Day commercials  multiply. I've talked to JW about this. His view is yes, it's one of those obligatory times on the calendar, but so what? He wants to make it nice for me. He's happy to make it nice for me. We don't have to make a big deal about it - maybe pack a lunch, a bottle of Champagne and drive down the coast for the day. Do something beautiful like that. Too sweet.

Love makes you goofy, doesn't it? You think you'll do it differently than anyone ever has, that you won't fall into the traditional rituals or standard expectations, but in the end we all want the same thing - to be cherished, desired and loved. And we all want - each in our own way - to have that love acknowledged. Before you know it you're talking about what to do on Valentine's Day and and you're driving down the coast.

So I decided to speak with a few of my single friends who, as I said, hate, hate, hate Valentine's Day, with the goal that I would land solidly on one side of the V Day issue or the other. And you know what each one of them has said to me? You deserve it. Revel in your love. Love is good. All you need is love.

I buy it.

Happy Valentine's Day -
great post! WVFC's own D.J. Carey had a similar experience ( http://womensvoicesforchange.org/a-change-of-heart... ), a change of heart. While not a big fan of Valentine's day (or any seemingly commercial holidays), through a small pink heart found in a drawer, she was brought back to a memory that reminded her of simply the love shared in her family.

I hear you, Ardee-ann, and i agree that you don't need a designated day to mark your commitment. for some reason, this year, this relationship is just different.

Once I got past decorated shoe boxes and Valentine's Day parties in grade school I have never seen the appeal in Valentine's Day. I have had romantic husbands and lovers along the way. I tell them I don't play the Valentine's game. They seemed relieved.

I have been in a 15 year long relationship with the absolute love of my life. We do not celebrate Valentine's Day, it is all puffery as far as we are concerned. Now this does not mean we do not celebrate love. We enjoy it daily and don't see the need to jump into the vat of over commercialization to "prove" anything to each other. We have love and that is all we need.

Just another day at the ranch,

Ardee-ann

Thanks Hilary! I'm looking at the day as a celebration of love, too, and not just romantic love. I still send my daughters, who are well out of the house, Valentine's Day cards every year.

Congratulations on being able to celebrate Monday!

I remember that when I was single for years, I always made Valentine's Day a special day just for myself, even though I longed for a relationship. Once I started dating and then got married, my husband and I always set Feb. 14 aside for a special day ... not so much because it's "Valentine's Day," but more to celebrate the fact that we found each other. (And now that we have children, the day is becoming much less a celebration of romantic love and more about loving others.) It's been fun to pamper others and be pampered one day each February.

Have a great Valentine's Day!
