Wake Up Your Wardrobe With Pieces You Already Own: Black Pumps

AMC's Mad Men has us all wanting to dress better, but for the most part, a billowy shirt dress or skinny pencil skirt isn't practical for everyday. But you can take a page from Joan Holloway's book and make your super practical jeans and top look a little more exciting and lady like by adding a really beautiful pair of black pumps.

How we usually wear them: With a dress or skirt, for business or after-five.

Instead try this: Pair pumps with either a boot cut or a skinny jean, or with cropped pants. But mind your hems -- boot cut jeans should fall to within a quarter inch of the floor, while skinny jeans should touch the top of the pump at the heel. Cropped pants should hit at the ankle.

Keep proportion in mind: Balance a skinny jean with a longer sweater, or cropped pants with a slightly wider top. Boot cut jeans are your best bet if you're looking for a versatile piece to pair with dressy shoes; opt for a mid rise in a dark rinse, of course.

Skinny jeans are absolutely not de rigueur! (I love that phrase.) Choose the silhouette that works best for your particular figure and lifestyle. A dark-rise, mid-rise jean with a straight leg (not skinny but not flared) is the most versatile option.

And THEN put your heels on.

I used to wear leggings with oversize sweaters back in grade school (mid-90s). So... when did that silhouette become de rigueur? It's comfy, sure, but...

This is all sour grapes because I cannot wear skinny jeans at ALL. my runners' legs just do not accomodate them. Siiiigh.

I love the idea of dressing up a simple outfit with a pair of black pumps, but those heels look painful and difficult to walk in! Admittedly, not as bad as the crazy heels ( http://womensshoesblogs.blogspot.com/2009/09/crazy... ) in the fall fashion shows.

I am inspired by this post however - am just going to try to find heels that are a little more friendly.
