A Walking Legacy

Dear Friends & Family:

With the encouragement of my husband, I have taken on an incredible challenge this Fall.  On November 7, 2008, Chris and I will return to Dallas where I will join thousands of other women and men as I walk 60 miles over three days.

I am walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day; an event that benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.  For more than 25 years, every advancement in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention has received funding pursuant to a Komen for the Cure grant. They are working hard to build a future without breast cancer, and I plan on raising $2,200.00 to help bring us closer to that goal.

Without a cure, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  Fifteen years ago my Grandma Joy was the one of those eight women.  She immediately put up the fight of her life and won the first battle.  Then four years ago, the cancer returned.  This time it was a grave diagnosis, but Grandma Joy, without hesitation, simply prayed that God would grant her the strength to endure the difficult treatments so that she could continue caring for the love of her life, my Granddaddy.  God answered her prayers, and she was able to stand bravely by his side until our Lord called him home on December 27, 2005.

For two years thereafter, and until her death on January 5, 2008, I personally witnessed her courage and faith as her body eventually succumbed to metastastic breast cancer; a cancer that ultimately infected her liver, her bones, and portions of her lungs.  Without a single complaint, she took care of her family, helped me plan our wedding, and truly was the glue that held our family’s joy, love and faith together.  She is simply the bravest woman I know, and she will always be my best friend.  I walk for Grandma Joy

I hope that you will join me in the fight against breast cancer.  Please consider making a donation in any amount to which you feel led.  Your donations are greatly appreciated.  To make a donation, you can visit the Breast Cancer 3-Day website where you will be directed to the 3-Day online donation page.  I hope to reach my fundraising goal by October 1, 2008.

Chris and I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and we thank you for your support.  But, more importantly, we thank you for the years of prayers and support you expressed for Grandma Joy.  We invite you to walk with us here at frontporchlegacy.com where I’ll be writing about our journey.  We will walk for all those who have gone before us, those present with us, and the hope that one day there will be no one who needs to walk after us.
