NEW YORK - AUGUST 07: People soak in the water at one of three portable dumpster pools in midtown Manhattan August 7, 2010 in New York City. Nothing’s more refreshing on a hot August day than taking a dip in a giant dumpster, right? Well, the people who went for a swim in these garbage dumpsters definitely think so.

On Saturday, 420 New Yorkers brought their towels to one of the three dumpster-turned-swimming pools located near the Grand Central Station viaduct. Designer David Belt, whose firm Marco Sea created the first dumpster swimming pool last year, helped construct the 8-by-22 foot, felt-lined dumpster pools located at Park Avenue and 40th Street. All you need is a first-come first-serve wristband and your bathing suit to go for a swim in the 4600 gallon, chlorinated pool. The city is also going to be closing down Park Avenue to cars on the following two Saturdays (August 14th and 21st) for dumpster pool-goers as part of the third annual Summer Streets Program.

Curious about how they construct the dumpster oasis? Watch as cameras follow in the creation of the original dumpster swimming pool.

These dumpster pools are going green while also saving green. All pools were built from donated materials, and Belt says the transportation of the dumpster pools was only $200 -- much less than it would cost to build and maintain a permanent pool. Belt hopes the charm and humor behind the swimming areas along with their affordability will lead to an up-springing of dumpster pools in other urban areas.

Would you take a dip in the dumpster? Where do you want to see the next dumpster pool?

I think it is incredibly cool. I think our little town could use a few of them! Especially since this heat and humidity seems endless.

I don't care how they spin this to make it appealing, a dumpster by any other name is still a DUMPSTER!!
