Wall of Fame or Shame? Greeting Cards With Flavor Strips

Little girl blowing out the candles on birthday cake

First there were cards. Then there were e-cards. Then there were songs, then voice recordings, and now I am beginning to question the sanity of the entire greeting card industry.

American Greeting cards has just announced the roll-out of Tasties, a new line of greeting cards that include -- wait for it -- flavor strips. So now you can taste that cake on the front of your card, or maybe just a completely chemical fabricated facsimile thereof!

Apparently, there will also be doughnut-flavored greeting cards. And margarita-flavored greeting cards. (If they can figure out how to get a shot of tequila into, like, a Listerine-strip casing, can you imagine what this will do for trainwreck celebrities the world over? And college football?) I can just see it now -- Happy 21st birthday! I'm not there to buy you a beer, so here's a Sam Adams flavor strip. Drink up, hoss.

I'm sure some of you will disagree with me (I know someone on the editorial staff who disagrees, ahem, cough). That's cool -- let's put it a vote! Do you think this is the dumbest idea ever or rockstar awesomesauce? Put your thoughts in the comments below! And have a great fourth of July, y'all.

Now we'll have nimrods in CVS licking cards - just what the world needs. Try explaining that to your 3-year old.

The birthday cake flavored card is a little over the top, but just think of it... now you can finally get a card that says "eat crow" and actually tastes like crow.

Not my particular choice of flavor but one I will indeed gift some folks with.

Ew! I thought the singing cards were pure evil, but this may be even worse.

The question is... what DOES a sparkling vampire taste like.

Inquiring minds NEED TO KNOW.

They'd have to be wrapped, certainly. But can't you just see kids ripping into them in the stores while their parents shop for the perfect card - eating all of the taste strips out of cards. Or teens causing trouble by eating the taste strips out of cards. That could indeed be a problem.

If I sent you one of these with a cute little *sparkle* note, you'd be tickled pink because it's quirky, just like me.

In fact, I'm going to go in search of the perfect one just for you (if I can ever find these in stores.) ;-)

It does seem a bit overkill. Plus I wonder what will keep people from licking the cards in the store...I guess they can wrap them in plastic....too much work!

Y'all are sticks in the mud - and I mean that in the nicest way.

These are fun! I hope my family members aren't reading this so they'll be really surprised when these start showing up in their mailboxes.

Then again, I like there to be food in my food (and not flavored-non-food in my greeting cards). Why not stop with scratch and sniff?

Got to say, not putting it in my mouth. But I'm the squeamish sort.
