There are people who’ve commit murder for money, and those who’ve killed for love. However, Jonathan Wicks, a 48-year-old TV executive from the UK, falls into a different category of criminal, killing his wife, Sarah, after she burned his roast beef dinner.

Red Wine Roast with Bernese Potato Dumplings

After a dinner party in celebration of his 47th birthday early last year, Wicks got into an argument with his wife, Sarah, 49. The fight, incited by Wicks’ overcooked meal, lead to his wife throwing plates and eventually, Wicks delivering a single blow to his wife’s neck. The hit ruptured an artery in Sarah’s neck, killing her instantly.

Wicks initially fled from the scene but returned 20 minutes later to call paramedics. Authorities arrived soon after and arrested an enraged, emotional and intoxicated Wicks.

The verdict of the trial was announced last Tuesday, convicting Wicks of manslaughter and sentencing him to prison -- for 18 months, 110 days of which have already been deducted for time spent in police custody.

Sentencing Judge Richard Griffith-Jones described the murder as both an “unattractive” and “tragic” event detracting from Wicks’ otherwise “good character” and “respectable and successful life.”

After serving half of his already shortened 18-month sentence, Wicks with be released on license.

What are your opinions on Wicks being released by Christmas?

What an awful story. Yes, death is death, but murder isn't always murder. It sounds to me like it was pretty unintentional. Nevertheless, he did hit her- he dealt her a blow that was so hard it killed her. I can't believe he got away...with murder.

Seriously, I HATE it when that happens - when my murders interfere with my life as a respectable professional person. So inconvenient!

(18 months? Oh, how his 401K will suffer. The humanity!!)

Amazed at how short that sentence is. For manslaughter... a woman is dead -- a life is gone -- and he will be home by Christmas.

Domestic violence incidents like this aren't generally a one-time thing... happy happy marriage and suddently explosion over charcoal chicken.

Wish more light was being given to the DV and not just the "burnt dinner" situation.

It should be kept in mind that the prosecution did not charge this man with murder, but rather with unlawful killing (according to the daily mail article in the first link). There is a difference in terms of the level of criminal intent and therefore the legal responsibility, which results in lower mandatory maximum and minimum sentences for the crime.

That said, I find the low sentence deplorable for such an obvious case of domestic violence with such grave consequences.

I seriously doubt the whole story has been told about this couple....murder is murder is murder. A murder and good character just don't go hand in hand no matter how you doll up his resume. God forbid he miss more than a little over a year of his precious career while his wife's life has ended!

[snip] “tragic” event detracting from Wicks’ otherwise “good character” and “respectable and successful life.” [snip]

So... murder shouldn't detract from his professional successes? What would then?

I highly doubt that the burnt dinner was the whole reason for the fight. Any couple who would get into a physical fight like that had more going on than just burnt dinner. Big, long-term issues in the relationship that bubbled over into violence.

His prison sentence was far too short.

The topic of the argument is irrelevant, but the burnt dinner seems to serve as an excuse for the husband and a means to blame the victim.

We'd hate for the fact that he killed his wife to detract from his successful life...you know...having it be an "unattractive" experience.

Seriously?!
