FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - JUNE 17: A Spirit Airlines Inc. plane sits on the tarmac at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport after striking pilots agreed on June 16 to a new contract June 17, 2010 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The airline announced that planes will start flying as soon as this afternoon. The pilots walked out on June 12 in a dispute over pay and benefits with the Miramar, Florida discount airline. ABC News called the company out on their "M.I.L.F." promotion (Many Islands, Low Fares, my pasty Midwestern butt).

ABC reports:

It's impossible to know exactly what percentage of Americans are familiar with the slang acronym, but Spirit Airlines maintains that the executive who authorized the MILF promotion did not know the connection.

"Not at all," Juan Arbelaez, the director of communications for the company's Latin American market, told ABC News when asked whether the airline was aware of the racy implications. "We started receiving some e-mails today."

I suppose they also didn't realize their M.U.F.F. Diving (Many Unbelievable Fantastic Fares) ad had, um, other connotations, either.

Spirit also seems to have misunderstood Americans' feelings about the oil spill. They are shocked, shocked! that anyone is upset about this ad:

I guess I'll just take my milfy, muffy money elsewhere.

I'll take a lame pun any day instead of this lazy advertising (as you said, Deb). These tactics recall the days when putting busty blondes in bikinis were used to sell, uh, pretty much everything. Sex still sells, of course. But this isn't sexy either. It's just weird.

And then the BP reference? Yeesh. This airline needs some serious PR help.

MILF and muff humor is juvenile and just plain lazy advertising that just catches attention without supporting the brand. But the beach oil is just horrible. Not only is it just plain rude to all who have lost so much because of the disaster, but even on a commercial lever it is crappy advertising because it shows complete disregard for exactly what Spirit banks on, travel and tourism. Horrible. Does anyone want any company that dim to hoist them into the clouds in a tin room?

They got our attention and that's really all they wanted. Kinda sad. Kinda creepy.

So, the milf thing kinda made me laugh. I don't get offended by such petty things. Whether it was a mistake or not, I really don't care as it does not affect me and is not worth getting my panties in a bunch over.

One mistake? Maybe. Two? I don't think so. Three moronic mistakes? No way.
