Warm and Wacky TV/ Movie Christmas Moments

With Christmas a week away I thought it was a good time to reflect on some of my favorite TV/movie Christmas moments, and being the generous blogger I am, I decided to share those moments with you.  The traditional elements required of any good Christmas story are love, family, friendship, a heartwarming lesson and a tree that looks like it was decorated by Martha Stewart.  Several of my picks epitomize those solid Christmas traditions, but some of my choices are more, shall we say...offbeat.  Here they are in alphabetical order.

Christmas On Television

A Charlie Brown Christmas:  There's a reason this one is at the top of almost everyone's Christmas favorites list each year.  It's because it's perfect.  My favorite moment: What else?  Linus on stage telling the story of the birth of Christ.  Blanket or no blanket, I 'heart' Linus.

Blackadder's Christmas Carol:  This bawdy holiday romp is a delicious spin on the classic story by Charles Dickens.  Starring Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Miranda Richardson and Hugh Laurie, this 1988 Britcom special uses the characters from the Blackadder series and tells the tale of Ebenezer Blackadder...the nicest man in England.  Yeah, that's right, the nicest.  Until......My favorite moment:  When Ebenezer discovers in the end that "bad guys have all the fun!"

Check out this clip (it's number one of five):

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer:  This special was made at the height of the television claymation boom and I'll trade all your animatronic characters for one talking, claymation jack-in-the-box.   My favorite moment:  When Santa picks up the toys from the Island of Misfit Toys to find them homes on Christmas Eve.  Most heartbreaking moment:  Before Santa gets there when the toys think they're stranded for another year. Every time that little rag doll starts to cry, I blubber like a baby.  So sue me.

Shrek The Halls:  It's the newest on my list, it just came out last year, but it's quite sweet and includes all our favorites:  Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and the gingerbread man.  My favorite moment:  the opening shot where it looks like it's winter and snowing on two hilltops, before pulling back to reveal it's really summer and the "snow" is really baby powder Shrek is sprinkling on his baby's butt.

The Nutcracker:  This 1977 version was produced for television and stars Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland in their absolute prime.  The staging is reworked for TV and to showcase the prowess of its stars.  My favorite moment:  I can't really pick one, the dancing is that wonderful.

The West Wing "In Excelsis Deo:"  This was an episode from when "The West Wing" was still an excellent show and hadn't yet turned into Aaron Sorkin's personal stream of conscientiousness with actors.  Set at Christmas, Toby Ziegler becomes obsessed with a homeless veteran who's found dead on park bench.  The episode follows Toby's efforts to find the man's brother, who's also homeless and to arrange a full military funeral for the deceased vet.  My favorite moment:  the ending montage of the man's funeral, attended by Toby, Mrs. Landingham and the man's brother and the beautiful Christmas celebrations at the White House as "The Little Drummer Boy" is sung by a children's choir in the background.  Lovely and powerful.

Christmas In The Movies

A Christmas Story:  I might take some heat for this, but I think this movie's overrated.  I thought it was cute when I saw it the first time, but on repeat viewing, for me it doesn't hold up.  I do however have a favorite moment from the movie:  When the family goes out to a Chinese restaurant for dinner.  I identify with that scene because I remember as a kid how special and exotic it felt to go out to a Chinese restaurant for dinner.

All That Heaven Allows:  Complete with sweeping melodramatic music, this 1955 movie starring Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman tells the timeless love story of a rich widow who falls in love with her much younger, hot and hunky, free-spirited, nature boy, gardener.  When word of their love gets around in their small New England town, scandal erupts.  The woman's friends snub her, her children disown her and as a result she breaks off the romance.  My favorite moment:  Now here's where Christmas comes in.

Hi Denise,

It's a parent's responsibility to make sure children watch classics like "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians."  To do anything less, I would need to call child services.

The small children do not appreciate Santa and the Martians the way I do. Sigh. I might try and force them to watch it again next week. Maybe they've grown up enough to appreciate it.

Hi Candelaria,

I knew there was at least one black person in "It's A Wonderful Life" and she was a woman!

Corynne at The Black Girl Site ( http://www.thatblackgirlsite.com/thatblackgirlblog... ) also likes "The Preacher's Wife."  I guess I'm not partial to movies with angels because I haven't seen that one either.  Another one to add to my "To Watch" list.

Always great to hear from you.

I watch it every single year and I almost always see something I forgot about it.  IThis year I noticede how the Black people in the town (all of whom seem to be women) are part of the giving to safe the savings and loan and how the Black woman is looking for a man (the more things change the more they stay the same).  I love the movie through and through!

There'a another holiday movie that I enjoyed a few year's ago with Holly Hunter and Robert Downey - Home for the Holidays.

I like both the original and the Denzel Washington & Whitney Houston remake of The Preacher's Wife.  It's set during the holidays.

Megan,

Wow, the pressure's on now! I have to admit that there are a couple of cringe-worthy moments in "Christmas Vacation" that I don't really like -- I mean, it is National Lampoon, after all -- but the heart of this movie is just an average guy who wants his family to have a good Christmas, and we can all relate to that. Besides, after watching this movie, you'll finally get all your friends' "Cousin Eddie" references!

I created one on a site that's supposed to then email it to you for free, but I never got it and never got a response to my own email.  Ah well.

I could not agree more on your TV pics. I still have trouble watching "House" because I expect "George" to pop out of Hugh Laurie. I haven't seen Shrek or Rudolph, but now I want to. WW is one of my favourite shows and that is one of my favourite episodes... well, that one and Posse Comitatus... Oh who am I kidding... there are so many good ones up to the end of season 4. And even after that it's not a terrible show, just disappointing comparatively...

But Christmas stuff... yeah, sort of got off topic there for a second. I haven't seen all the films, but I completely agree with the original "Miracle"... far better than the newer one. Looks like I have some renting to do.

Hi Jodifur,

That's the one ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110527/ ) Miss Geeky likes the best as well, starring Richard Attenborough as Santa and co-starring Dylan McDermott and Elizabeth Perkins.  It's okay, but for me doesn't live up to the classic with Edmund Gwenn.

BTW, forgive my off topic question but where'd you get your avatar?  It's very cute.  I've been trying to get one like it for my Twitter account (just as a temporary change-up) and I keep coming up short.

Thanks for commenting.

Hi Nordette,

You can watch all of Blackadder's Christmas Carol on YouTube.  It's separated into five video clips with the first one here ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM_ZWiG5jE4 ).  Segments two through five will then be listed in the right hand sidebar.  Let me know what you think of it.

You're right, "Home Alone" is a good one for parents and kids to watch together and though I've never seen "The Santa Clause" I know it's pretty popular.

but I could watch the new Miracle on the 34th Street every year.  I do believe in Santa Claus!

And I love Love Actually.  I need to watch that again.

I'm a sucker for "It's a Wonderful Life." Nothing beats that movie for me, but I recall enjoying Miracle on 34th Street until I was in my 30s.

Thank you for telling me about Blackadder's Christmas Carol, Megan. I'll be looking for that one. They lyrics to the theme song are a riot. As a child I enjoyed any presentation of A Christmas Carol, a spoof of it might be fun.

I'm not big on Christmas movies, yet I found myself watching a Lifetime Movie Network "Christmas I Dos" marathon Saturday while I was home sick. Enjoyed it, and that surprised me.

Love Actually may be one of my new Christmas favorites for the few that I have.

Tim Allen's movie The Santa Clause  seems to be on a lot lately.  And now I recall another movie that parents and offspring get a kick out of, Home Alone, the first one.

Hi Cathy,

I've never been a big Chevy Chase fan so the "Vacation" movies have never done much for me, but just your description makes me want to check out that scene.

I'd have to add the attic scene from "Christmas Vacation." I adore this movie -- it's a tradition at our house -- and Clark watching the family movies while stuck in the attic says it all for me.

Hi Deb,

"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" is right up there with "Laurel and Hardy Meet Frankenstein," but it was annual viewing at our house when I was a kid.

I never thought of the Peanuts gang as neglected but I guess you could make an argument for that.  :)

I understand not everyone is a Charlie Brown fan, and I can't watch the recent ones because the voices for me are just so wrong, but I love the Christmas special and since it came in at number 16 in last week's top 20 Nielsen list (after more than forty years), there's still lots of people who make it must see holiday viewing.

Thanks for commenting.

I had forgotten all about Santa Claus Conquers the Martians!  Love those late 60s films.  I need to see this again; it's been too long since my last indulgence.

But I'm not a fan of Charlie Brown movies though.  I know that is like admitting I kill unicorns to make bracelets from their horns.  But the problems of the Peanuts and their neglected little wah-wah-wah-wah-wah lives depresses me, even though Peppermint Patty was a vanguard "out" actress back in the day.

Great list!
