A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness is a wonderful, in depth look to a world of witches, vampires and daemons. This story delves into a fantasy world of such detail, all while keeping you firmly rooted in modern day England. While this novel is to a point about a forbidden love between species, I do not know if it would be the right fit for a “Twihard” or readers of that nature. It is a complicated story… but one that keeps you interested in every detail. You want to learn the rules that command the characters and you want them to break those very rules.

I was not happy with the way the book ended and found myself online making sure there would be a sequel. I found an interview with the author, Deborah Harkness and was delighted to read that this book would be the first in a trilogy. I will anxiously be awaiting the next installment to see where this story goes.

I would absolutely recommend this book, though I will recommend it on an e-reader before the hardback. It is a long book, 579 pages and the hardback was bulky to carry around. The story within the pages made it worth the weight in my bag however. I have fallen in love with the world created by Harkness and I am intrigued by her main characters, Matthew and Diana to a point that I haven’t reached in quite a while. A Discovery of Witches has drama, danger, forbidden love, wacky aunts and a scary mother in law, what more do you need?
