We Belong Together: A Book About Adoption and Families by Todd Parr

I was excited when my kid's early childhood center went Todd for a day. Brightly colored banners featuring smiley faces welcomed children's author Todd Parr. A paper statue of Otto the Dog (my favorite character) greeted guests at the front door.

The enthusiasm of the parents nearly exceeded the students as we entered the music room. Todd read, drew, and danced around the floor for an hour. It was the most memorable author's event I have attended.

We could not leave the event without purchasing a book. My daughter pointed to one that had a teddy bear on the cover..no surprises there. But what did surprise me was her instinctive choice as she wasn't even close to reading yet. At the time, we had been on the lookout for some appropriate preschool level books on adoption.  This book turned out be exactly what we needed.

The text is simple and straightforward. "We belong together because you needed someone to say I love you and we had love to give." Joys of day to day family life are highlighted. One of my favorite activities to do with my kids is mentioned: "You needed someone to read to you and we had stories to share."

We have enjoyed reading We Belong Together because it says so much..without telling too much. As each family has a unique adoption journey, parents and children are free to create their own dialogue as they turn the pages.

I am glad my kids enjoy revisiting this book. We take it off the shelf and begin a new conversation each time we read it. Todd includes a sweet letter to his readers: "There are different ways to make a family. It just takes love. Share your home and share your heart."

So vive la familia..however it is formed!
