Victory! Dos Equis to Drop Sexist Ad. (Like, Really Sexist.)

Dos Equis has agreed to stop running an ad that appeared to advise men on hunting women (as in hunting with spears).  No, really.

Last month I wrote about a sexist ad Dos Equis was running that advised men to:

“[a]pproach women like you do wild animals, with caution and a soothing voice.”

I asked readers to contact Dos Equis and share their thoughts about the ad, and apparently people did. Yesterday Heineken, Dos Equis’ manufacturer, called to say that they had decided to remove the ad, even though they had reviewed it and concluded that it met their standards.

The Heineken representative I spoke with said the ad should be gone within two weeks. If you spot it anywhere after that, please post a comment to let me know!

In the name of free press, and also as a marketing student, I don't believe Heneiken, the owners of Dos Equis Beer, should have pulled the ad deemed as offensive from a few offended non-customers. I think the ad was simply targeting the beer purchasing audience. If the ad offended people so be it. But to pull an entire advertising campaign over a few unsatisfied non-customers who feel unloved by an advertising slogan, I would like to make an example of an ad campaign that was run many years ago by another beer company which had to to with frogs. Budweiser, at one time ran ads during the superbowl which depicted their frogs drunk and saying the word Bud - Weis - er. No frog lovers came out of the wood work to stand up for the rihghts of frogs. Peta didn't attack the Budweiser factories. So when will companies stand up for their brand and the dollars spend on careful consideration into their campaigns. The world may never know.

In the name of free press and as a marketing student, I don't think Heineken, the owner of Dos Equis Beer should have pulled the ad. I believe that the ad was simply creative. If it offended some people so be it. But to pull an entire campaign over a few people who feel unloved by a campaign, lets transfer back in time to when Budweiser was using Frogs. The ads kept on running. But if Heineken would have stood up for their brand their target audience and the small controversy that may have ensued would have prompted their target market to buy more Dos Equis Beer.

I'm glad to hear that reasonable minds prevailed in this case. I never saw this particular ad. I'm too busy spitting nails every time I see the commercial in which a man wins a Klondike bar, game-show style, for listening to his wife talk for 10 seconds. Ugh.
