Weekend in Amsterdam ~ What’s not to Love!
Our current home base is Bonn, Germany and that is pretty much the center of all of Europe. Being in the center gives us a lot of opportunity to travel and see so many amazing countries and cities! Often we will just take off for the weekend and go somewhere new and fun! Today I am going to tell you about our weekend in Amsterdam ~ and oh was it a lot of fun!! Now we only spent one weekend there, so I am sure there are a lot of other things to do ~ but this is what we did in two days!
- Day 1
- Check in ~ Get a Map
- Dinner and a boat ride
- Red light district, coffee shops, cheese shops
- Late night stroll through old town
- Day 2
- Anne Frank's House
- Lunch in Chinatown
- Stop at Starbucks
- Walk past palace, train station and the main canals
- Dinner and a comedy show (in English)
- Vodka Shots at the ice bar
- Day 3
- The Heineken experience
- What to take home ~
- See Ya later Amsterdam
First find a place to stay! Now I am a huge advocate for having a flat, where we can have breakfast and coffee in our PJ’s to start our day! So I found a great little flat, directly in the center of the city ~ walking distance to everywhere! Parking is crazy expensive, so plan accordingly. The flat we stayed at was right on one of the canals on Singel Street, the owner lived on site and was very helpful during our stay! We stayed in his Pearl Apartment and it was sooo cute, right on the canal, and just the perfect place for the two of us! (We left the kids at home this weekend! Yippe!)
If you want to read about his flats you can go here http://www.amsterdamjewel.com/ You can also find him on booking.com if you feel more comfortable booking that way! But the owner was very helpful, sent us emails and directions! Now the stairs are very very steep so if you have a problem climbing stairs this building is not for you ~ but if not this place is really great! Nice comfy beds, great view, and easy access to everything we never once drove our car anywhere! He has parking on site, which is from the city and is quite expensive, or you can park at the many city parking lots for minimal fees each day and walk/tram back into the city! EASY PEASY!
So now that we are all checked in ~ I am sooo ready to go exploring! Get a MAP here is a great link to an online printable map of the streets of Amsterdam! http://www.planetware.com/map/amsterdam-map-nl-amst_ce.htm
You know me I already have everything planned, timed, tickets bought and reserved, so I don’t have to guess, or wait in line for anything! First stop tonight was dinner ~ its Friday night and everything is most likely packed! I booked a diner boat ride, so we could see Amsterdam at night and get some good food along the way! It was late afternoon when we arrived, so the sun was setting and the whole city was coming to life! Now the nice man who owns the flat we are renting, owns a dinner boat too ~ however ~ it was booked when we went so we took another one. (book in advance) The name of the boat tour we took, was Lovers Company ~ and the boat was very nice and the food was surprisingly really good! We also had all you could drink beer and wine that was very nice, and included in the price! The cruise was 2 hours, with dinner and commentary. The website is linked below~ and we took the one called “dinner cruise” We reserved our tickets online and printed them from home so we were ready to go when we got there! http://www.lovers.nl/en/tickets-and-prices/dinner-cruise/
We really enjoyed it and got a good look at all of Amsterdam at night all lite up! I highly recommend taking a night dinner cruise! Again we did not get to take this one but you also might check this one out and if you rent his flats, he might give you a discount on the boat ride ~ I know he will give you a discount for booking online! http://www.amsterdamjewelcruises.com/ If it is anything like his flats it will be a wonderful trip!
After dinner and the boat ride, we decided to take a walk and see the streets of Amsterdam and of course when in Amsterdam you have to see the Red Light district and …. Yes a Sex Show! I think it is a must just to say you have been there! And oh Yes my hubby was super excited ~ I surprised him with tickets to a midnight sex show and well now it’s out of his system! LOL Listen, I have to tell you that these are not really that great, and the performers look miserable and bored ~ but like I said ~ everyone has to do it once (hee hee no pun intended ~ ok maybe it was intended! ) We went to one of the oldest and most women friendly Sex Shows in Amsterdam called the Casa Rosso ~ It’s all lite up with a neon pink elephant ~ and well I like Pink hee hee so we went there! I booked our tickets online and got directions before we left home ~ the address is Oudezijds Achterburgwal 106-108 and it is right in the middle of everything. If you get lost anyone can point you in the right direction! You can read about it and book your tickets here! http://www.casarosso.nl/ . I am not going to explain each act, guy on girl, girl on girl, or girl on banana ~ you have to see if for yourself. Give yourself an hour, and then I think you will have had enough!! Get yourself a drink, take a seat and well enjoy it ~ come on it's Amsterdam!
