Weekend Menu Planning: Cook Something Created or Inspired by Julia Child

In 2002 a bored government worker named Julie Powell started a food blog, intending to cook her way through Julia Child's classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The rest is food blog history of course, as the now deleted blog went on to become first a book, and now the movie Julie and Julia starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell. Julie and Julia opens on August 7, but today a few lucky food bloggers were invited to premieres of the movie.

At the risk of losing all food blogger credibility, I have to confess I never even saw Julie Powell's blog, although I've certainly heard enough about it through the years. However, like every food blogger out there, I'm anxiously looking forward to seeing the movie when it hits my town, and also excited about the way this movie will throw a spotlight on food blogs in general as well as Julia Child's contributions to the food world.

I recently discovered one charming blog project inspired by the release of the movie. Shari from Whisk: A Food Blog has created A Web Companion to Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. After appropriately deciding to only use links from food bloggers, Shari assembled "hundreds of inspiring pictures and engaging articles written by the world-wide food blogging community about the recipes from this book."

The more time I spent looking through this collection on Shari's blog, the more amazed I became to see just what an influence Julia's ideas about proper cooking have been on those of us who love to cook good food. I encourage you to visit Whisk and see the whole collection of Julia Child inspired food blog recipe posts. After you see the list, you may even feel like cooking something inspired by Julia yourself. Of course many of the recipes in the book or on the list are beyond the reach of the average home cook, but here are five easy Julia Child inspired dishes to get you started.

Onion Soup
Photo of Soupe à L'Oignon
from Whisk: A Food Blog.

French Onion Soup is probably one of the most well-known of the dishes from Julia Child's book, and there's a beautiful version of Soupe à L'Oignon from Whisk included in the round-up of dishes.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Photo of Purée de Pommes de Terre à l'Ail
from Andrea's Recipes.

Julia would have called it Purée de Pommes de Terre à l'Ail but Garlic Mashed Potatoes from Andrea's Recipes would have met with her approval.

Eggs Poached in Red Wine
Photo of Oeufs en Meurette
from the Traveler's Lunchbox.

French Cooking includes many interesting ways to cook eggs, and the Oeufs en Meurette from The Traveler's Lunchbox are a version of Julia's Oeufs à la Bourguignonne or Eggs Poached in Red Wine.

Blanched Green Beans
Photo of Haricot Verts Blanchis
from Simply Recipes/

One of Julia's vegetable recipes was Haricot Verts Blanchis or Blanched Green Beans and the version from Simply Recipes features beans sauted with shallots and pancetta.

Cream Cheese Tart
Photo of Tarte au Fromage Frais
from Chocolate and Zucchini.

Of course, the wonderful pastries are a big part of French cooking, and Clotilde from Chocolate and Zucchini has a version of Tarte au Fromage Frais or Cream Cheese Tart that could have come right from the book.

Have you ever cooked one of Julia Child's recipes? Shari's project to collect posts featuring Julia Child inspired recipes continues, so if you'd like to participate, check the list and make one of the recipes that don't yet have a featured post. If you have cooked something by the fabulous Julia, we'd love to hear about it in the comments!

(Every Thursday night on BlogHer, we spotlight five recipes with a common theme for a feature called Weekend Menu Planning, hoping one of them might make it onto the menu at your house. You can find previous recipes shared by clicking the tag Weekend Menu Planning.)

Kalyn Denny also blogs at Kalyn's Kitchen, where she's focused on low-glycemic recipes using fresh ingredients. The only Julia Child recipe Kalyn has ever cooked was Spaghetti Marco Polo, which she made for a food blog event in honor of

Right now I'm *trying* not to buy cookbooks, since I'm spending mega bucks on my house, but soon!

I think I may go to Amazon and check for used copies of some of these Julia books (before everyone else gets the idea!) Never heard of Turkey Orloff, sounds interesting.

I think it will be a big day at the movies on August 7!

I am really looking forward to this movie. I don't have Julia's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, but I do have both volumes of Juia Child and Company. Her Turkey Orloff was the first recipe I tried. It was delicous. Gosh, I haven't made it in years!

Definitely pick up MtAoFC (as Julie refers to it in "Julie & Julia")! It is so worth having. I confess I only have the first volume so far, but I'm sure someone will think of it for a Christmas gift one of these years . . .

 +1 on can't-wait-to-see-this!!

The moms from my daughter's Brownie troop have all decided we're going to have a Mom's Night Out to go see this movie and I can't wait!! I've been slow to jump on the food blog bandwagon, having only discovered them in the past year or so, but they are a joy. These bloggers are amazing- they are the Renaissance Women (and men, for some of them) of our time. They cook, they develop recipes, they know their way around computers and the internet, and most of them are also excellent writers and photographers. Truly amazing.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of bloggers going to the movies the day this opens!

How lovely, I must admit that I didn't know about Julie's blog either until the movie started being talked about.  Sad that I didn't have the chance to read it in it's original "language".

 Great post!

Our food memories are a part of each life passage that gets stored away as part of the experience. I'm fascinated also by how this project has apparently combined a blog, a book about the blog, and a book that inspired the blog. And from all reports, Meryl Streep was superb. No surprise there; she's amazingly talented!

I'm fascinated by this story and blog-to-movie because of the way food becomes the vehicle for memoir. A surprising number of memoirs develop around some aspect of food: meals of childhood, meals prepared during a year of infidelity, meals while traveling. The food becomes a foundation for developing story about life and living and love and relationships.

On a lighter note, judging from the previews I've seen of the movie, Meryl Streep is so effective at capturing Julia Child, she seems about 12" taller!

I am adding it to my list right now! (Maybe that will be my "read on the plane book" for BlogHer.) She was an amazing person, wasn't she. I hear that Meryl Streep is spot-on playing her too. Can't wait.

I grew up watching her show every morning. I think it was on right before Sesame Street here in Canada but I could be wrong. I didn't have the greatest sense of time at that age. lol

I desperately want both volumes of Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I just feel like I need to wait for them to make their way to me, if that makes any sense.

Have you read her autobiography, My Life in France? I loved it.

A book group came to take a private cooking class with me, and they chose a menu based entirely on Mastering the Art Volume One. We started with leek and potato soup, the very firt recipe in the book, and progressed to a baked tuna dish, green beans with orange, and something gooey (I can't remember what, but it was like a tiramisu) for dessert. We decided to watch an episode of The French Chef beforehand, to inspire us. It was without doubt one of the most enjoyable cooking classes I've ever hosted, as the spirit of Julia seemed to be with us in the kitchen. Thanks for this wonderful post.

I can't wait to see this movie. I'm thinking maybe I need to buy thw 2-volume set of Mastering the Art of French Cooking in honor of the occasion. Right now the only Julia Child book I have is From Julia Child's Kitchen.

Spinach quiche sounds great!

I received both volumes as a gift from a friend and they are one of the most memorable presents I have ever received. I have learned a great deal from Julia through them.

The recipe I turn to over and over is quiche with spinach and her technique for improving frozen spinach when I use it.

I'm really looking forward to the movie.
