I don't need to start out by telling you about how breakfast is the most important meal of the day, do I? I'm hoping everyone from your mother to your doctor to your high school health teacher has impressed that fact upon you sufficiently that you're making at least some effort to eat breakfast every day. Now how about kicking things up just a notch and making sure those breakfasts contain whole grains most of the time?

Whole grains are grains that haven't been refined to remove the germ and bran. All grains are good sources of vitamins and minerals and low in fat, but whole grains also contain fiber and other nutrients that are stripped off from refined grains. There's a good list of whole grains at Wikipedia on whole grains if you want to see the range of choices. The truth is that most people don't eat enough whole grains and eating them in breakfast cereal is an easy (and tasty!) way to get more of them. Here are some delicious-sounding recipe ideas for whole grain cereals that I hope will encourage you to do just that.

I grew up on Cream of Wheat, but my mom's never looked as good as this Pumpkin Spice Swirl Cream of Wheat from Kathy at Happy Healthy Life.

Quinoa is a grain that's trendy and with good reason -- it's much higher in protein than other whole grains. I think this Chai Spiced Quinoa Porridge from Jeanette's Healthy Living looks like a perfect breakfast.

Susan at Food Blogga also loves quinoa, and if you have apples that aren't quite crisp any more she recommends turning them into this Apple-Maple Walnut Breakfast Quinoa.

Sure everyone has had oatmeal, but this Apple Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal from Two Peas and Their Pod was a new idea for me. I like the idea that you can be doing other things while the oatmeal cooks, and Maria says baked oatmeal reheats well.

Finally, steel cut oats are the most nutritious type of oatmeal, and I loved them when I tried cooking them in the crockpot and then eating Steel Cut Oats with Agave Nectar and Pecans.

I've been in the mood for oatmeal myself lately; sounds like I better try that one!

Thank you for introducing all the menus. My husband and I eat homemade granola for breakfast. But the milk is a little too cold in the winter .
We tried the oatmeal with cranberries and walnuts the other day. We are hooked!! We've alreay tried it three times with differernt fruits and nuts.
I'm going to try the quinoa next.

My sister is allergic to cinnamon too, so I know how hard it can be to avoid it. I think of most of the fancier cereals as a weekend treat, but some of the overnight ones would be good for work days (minus the cinnamon of course!)

My goly, so many of those had cinnamon. (I'm allergic.)

When I do eat breakfast, I go for a simple bowl of plain oatmeal with a teaspoon of honey after it is finished. I occasionally toss in some cranberries, but that's as crazy as I have time for in the morning!

I'm pretty good about eating my oatmeal or steel cut oats but I'm definitely going to try some of these ideas for other grains.

Every winter, I intend to make a hot breakfast cereal with mixed grains, and now I need to actually do it! The quinoa recipes sound great.

I'm going to make the Pumpkin Spice Swirl Cream of Wheat and Apple-Maple Walnut Breakfast Quinoa for my kids, sounds like dessert for breakfast! Terrific roundup as always Kalyn. Thank so much for including a couple of my recipes.

What I made was steel cut oats though, so if you make regular oatmeal you'll need to adjust the cooking time. I actually haven't made regular oatmeal in the crockpot either, but I know you can do it.

My very favorite breakfast of all time is Oatmeal with Agave Nectar and walnuts! It fills me up, warms me up and tastes so nutty and good. I've never made it in a crockpot, though, but you can bet I'm going to now!

I'll be sure to check out the other great looking suggestions, too.
