Weekend Menu Planning: Make Your House Smell Great with Homemade Applesauce!
by Kalyn Denny

Fall means time for apples, and cooks who like to bake go crazy in the fall with homemade apple pie, apple tarts, and apple cake. Of course all these apple dessert creations taste great, but one of the best and easiest use for fresh apples is homemade applesauce. If you haven't made homemade applesauce, you've never had *real* applesauce, which tastes amazing and makes the house smell wonderful too.

I've been noticing a lot of food bloggers making applesauce lately, and it seems there's an applesauce recipe for every type of cook, from crockpot applesauce to microwave applesauce, or simmer on the stove applesauce. Pick an applesauce recipe that suits your cooking style and make some homemade applesauce this weekend.

Using the crockpot has to be one of the easiest ways to make applesauce, but when Dara from Cookin' Canuck announced on Facebook that she was going to share the Family Crockpot Applesauce Recipe that she'd gotten from her mother-in-law, some family members weren't sure if they wanted this family favorite recipe posted on a blog. Luckily for her readers, Dara called her mother-in-law, who gave her approval for the recipe to be shared.

Obviously Dara's applesauce recipe was a hit, because Maria from Two Peas and Their Pod has already made Crockpot Chunky Cinnamon Applesauce from Dara's recipe and posted it too. What I love about this post is the idea Maria shared about her favorite way to eat applesauce, spread on on whole wheat toast instead of jam. Don't you think that sounds great!

Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are traditional in applesauce, but Lisa from Homesick Texan spices it up a bit more when she makes Ancho Chile Applesauce. Lisa took the train from NYC to Connecticut to pick the apples with her mother, who was there for a job interview, so there are two reasons this is special applesauce.

Occupation Mommy calls her naturally sweetened applesauce The Only Applesauce Recipe, but you do need a food mill. I do love it that this applesauce recipe has no added sugar (and I have a food mill!)

Another applesauce recipe that uses a food mill is Mom's Homemade Applesauce, which Carolyn at Umami Girl says is "life on a spoon" for her. She makes the applesauce on the day of her parent's 40th wedding anniversary, and there's a beautiful tribute to two loving parents here along with Mom's recipe.

Finally, if the microwave is your favorite cooking appliance, you need The Applesauce Recipe from Super Healthy Kids. It doesn't get much easier than this, and the applesauce looks great.

Love homemade applesauce!

I remember as a young adult, coming home from college for winter break.  I bargained w/my mom for homemade applesauce.  She would make it if I would peel them. :)  Totally worth the work!  I sat at the kitchen table w/ the TV on in the background, talking w/mom about the upcoming holidays, while she made the sauce.  Great memory!

I haven't made the sauce yet.  I wanted to pick the apples, but we haven't had time.  If we miss picking, I will buy from the store and make it.  No real recipe here, but it needs to have a lot of cinnamon! :)  And from your series on canning, I was so inspired.  I will be canning the sauce. :)  (Off topic, but we opened a jar of the spaghetti sauce I canned, and it was so exciting!)

Patience is a virtue that takes too long

What a great memory!

I love hearing how you made applesauce from your mom, and that you're continuing to make it yourself.  Fun to hear that youre canning too!

After picking apples every

After picking apples every September I have a pot of chunky applesauce in the fridge at all times. (Until I run out of apples - usually in Dec.) I use the recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook - just apples, water, brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. I LOVE it on dry oatmeal!

Great idea!

I never thought of eating apples on oatmeal, but I like the sound of it.

Wonderful list!

We simply can't get enough of my mother-in-law's applesauce in our household.  In fact, our crockpot is hard at work, cooking up another batch.  What a great list of applesauce recipes you compiled.  I'm very curious to try the ancho chile version; I'd imagine that would be great served with pork.

Love that idea!

I love the sound of Lisa's ancho chile applesauce with pork.

I'm making apple cake but I have a few apples left and am thinking a small batch of crockpot applesauce might be in order!

Applesauce to the Rescue!

We have an apple tree in our backyard, and end up with more apples than we know what to do with every fall. There are only so many apple pies we can manage.

The applesauce sounds like a great idea! Going to try the crockpot recipe.

Thanks,

Denise
