Weekend Menu Planning: Pittsburgh vs. Green Bay - Which Team Has the Best Food?

This Sunday, most people in the U.S will be watching the Super Bowl and probably indulging in some favorite foods while they watch. By now those who care about football know exactly which team they're cheering for, while those who care more about food know exactly what dishes they'll be making. If you want to add to the menu, it might be fun to serve something that's a traditional dish from Pittsburgh or Green Bay, so I've found some ideas to tempt you.

Whether or not you're actually planning to cook them though, I'd love to hear in the comments about which of these foods from Pittsburgh or Green Bay you think sounds the most appealing.

Pittsburgh Scores with Isaly's Chipped Ham Barbecue Sandwiches

Ham barbecue sandwiches are one famous Pittsburgh food, and to be authentic, the ham should be Isaly's chipped ham. The signature Ham Barbecue Sandwich recipe is published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and features Heinz Ketchup, another famous Pittsburgh food, or you can buy your barbecue sauce from Isalys. For a slightly different take, I thought the recipe for Isaly's Chipped Chopped Ham Sandwich Casserole looked like something that would be a big hit at a Super Bowl party.

Green Bay Scores with Beer and Cheese Spread or Fondue

Everything I read about Green Bay food traditions mentioned the trilogy of cheese, bratwurst, and beer, so I thought this German Beer and Cheese Spread from the Wisconsin Cheese Board might be the perfect Super Bowl party food. For a slightly different take on beer and cheese, you could make the Slow Cooker Beer and Cheese Fondue from A Year of Slow Cooking.

Pittsburgh Scores with Primanti Brother's Sandwiches

All the sandwiches at Primati Brothers are topped with french fries, coleslaw, and tomatoes, and the logo of this famous sandwich even appears on the I (heart) Pittsburgh t-shirts. I didn't find the exact recipe for this famous sandwich online, but the Pittsburgh Cheese Steak Panini from Panini Happy comes close. Green Bay Scores with Deep Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds

With all the cheese factories in Wisconsin, it's a natural that cheese curds are one of the cheese head's favorite snacks. You can just eat cheese curds right out of the bag, but for a Super Bowl party can you imagine the deliciousness of these Deep Fried Wisconsin Cheese Curds from Sunday Baker.

Pittsburgh Scores with the Turkey Devonshire Sandwich

Another favorite sandwich for Pittsburgh fans is the Turkey Devonshire Sandwich, a baked sandwich of layered bread, bacon, and sliced turkey, covered with with melted butter and cheese sauce and baked. Slightly less authentic but equally tasty are the Devonshire Panini Bites from Panini Happy, which I think look perfect for a Super Bowl party.

Green Bay Scores with Wisconsin Bratwurst

Homemade Wisconsin Bratwurst from Macheesmo might have convinced me that I'm cheering for Green Bay! I also like the sound of Grilled Bratwurst with Onions and Peppers from Leite's Culinaria, Wisconsin-Style Bratwurst from The Paupered Chef, and Homemade Bratwurst from Seriously Good.

If you cut down on the sugar in the Primanti's coleslaw recipe, it's actually sort of healthy! I love it as a summer side, but then, I also love to douse it in Frank's Red Hot.

I'm cheering for the Packers (as much as a person can cheer who really doesn't care who wins) so it's fun that the food from there seems to be so popular. And I'm thinking those deep-fried cheese curds are something I must try at least once.

I love the Super Bowl because it's kinda a license to eat yummy football food from wherever. I'm a serious fan of deep fried cheese curds, so that gets my vote. That said, my husband and I have joked about taking a trip to Pittsburgh just to get a Primanti Brother's Sandwich (is that ridiculous?). Love this post - it gave me some menu planning ideas for today!

Fried cheese curds are THE BEST GO PACK
My sister who lives in Madison and works part time in Green Bay mailed me a Wisconsin made Packer Kringle (pastry) for my Sunday breakfast.

Deep fried cheese curds are the best - especially when made with fresh curds that are still squeaky! Love Sunday Baker's recipe!

I'll be rooting for the Pack on Sunday with some fresh-made cheese curds, brats boiled in beer then grilled, with sauerkraut and grainy mustard on the side - the best way to eat em!

And, I have to admit that a Johnsonville brat is pretty darn good brat!

I'm not even cooking on Sunday. I'm attending a party and just bringing some sweet treats. But, I would love to find some deep fried cheese curds on offer when I arrive! I've never had them but would love a taste.

Good to know; thanks for clarifying! And I think both your recipes in this post look great! (Of course I would have to completely abandon my diet to eat any of this food, but hey, it's the Super Bowl!)

Just for the sake of clarity...both of the Primanti-style recipes referenced in this post (including mine!) call for vinegar-based coleslaw.

I totally suspected that this was one of those "you had to be there" type of sandwiches but I still had to take a shot at it.

And sadly, I had Pierogies on my list, and even found a blog with a great photo of them, but they never got back to me about using the photo, so after 2 days I just went with something else. Probably should have just put the link I guess.

I cannot state this enough: Those attempting to make Primanti Bros. sammiches at home need to use vinegar based coleslaw, NOT mayo based. Primanti Bros. uses vinegar based slaw and mayo based slaw will ruin the sammich taste. Completely. Utterly. And totally. That said, it's almost impossible to create the same taste at home. We've come close, but nothing beats the restaurant.

Also? No pierogies on the list? Sadface.
