Weekend Menu Planning: Sweet Potato Fries Can Be a Life-Changing Experience

Every year for Thanksgiving dinner, my mother would make sweet potatoes. They had some kind of brown-sugar topping, and sometimes even mini marshmallows. The sweet potatoes smelled great, and of course my mother and a few other members of the family raved about how delicious they were. Eventually I'd take a small serving, only to decide once again they were revolting, and for years I thought I truly hated sweet potatoes. Now fast forward many years later to the first time I tried sweet potato fries.

If I say I was surprised at how much I loved sweet potato fries, it would be completely understating it. On my blog I wrote, "Who would have imagined that these tasty roasted sweet potatoes dusted with a spicy mixture of ground herbs and spices would taste so amazing?" I tried the recipe for sweet potato fries out on my friend Robin, and we were both wowed by it.

Now I've tried cooking sweet potatoes a few other ways and I realize I don't hate sweet potatoes at all, I just hate sugary sweet potato casseroles with brown sugar and mini-marshmallows. I"ve found a number of good ways to cook sweet potatoes, but in my mind, nothing is much better than sweet potato fries. Apparently plenty of other food bloggers agree, because I found them raving about some pretty interesting variations of sweet potato fries that I'd like to suggest for your menu this weekend.

Sweet Potatoes vs. Yams:
If you haven't shopped for sweet potatoes recently, I want to clarify that sweet potatoes can have both white or orange flesh. In American grocery stores, the orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are often called "yams" even though true yams aren't really found in the United States. Those dishes of Candied Yams that are served at holidays are really candied sweet potatoes. I once got into a near-argument with a produce manager when I told him the "yams" he was selling were really orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, so don't be surprised if some people don't believe you. Don't take my word for it if you're skeptical, just Google "yams vs. sweet potatoes" and you'll find hundreds of sites that will confirm that the orange-fleshed "yams" sold in the U.S. are really sweet potatoes.

White-Fleshed vs. Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potatoes for Sweet Potato Fries
I like both types of sweet potatoes, but I've only made sweet potato fries with orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. If anyone has tried it with the white-fleshed variety, I'd love to hear how it worked. If you're going to try one of these recipes, you'll probably be buying "yams" or "sweet yams" which (I repeat) are really orange-fleshed sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes don't get crisp in the same way french-fried potatoes do, so you need to expect that if you decide to make them. Lolo from Vegan Yum Yum is still working on crispness expectations in her recipe for Spiced Sweet Potato Fries, but she does say they are delicious.

There seem to be an interesting assortment of spices that taste amazing on sweet potato fries, and Rosemary Garlic Sweet Potato Fries from Pinch My Salt, sound great with Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce.

Sweet Potato Fries

from Gluten Free [Cooking School]
Curried Sweet Potato Fries from Gluten Free [Cooking School] is a recipe with only three ingredients. I want to try this, because I'm thinking spicy curry powder is a great seasoning for sweet potatoes.

Sarah of Sarah's Cucina Bella says her husband *hates* sweet potatoes (sound familiar?) but when she made these Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries, he not only ate them, but he declared them to be "not bad."

Finally, another simple but delicious-sounding version of Sweet Potato Fries from Delicious Wisdom, where the post starts out "I could eat these every day with unwavering enthusiasm."

Have you made sweet potato fries? If you have a great recipe, please share the link or your recipe in the comments. I'd also love to hear from anyone

It IS such a revelation, isn't it? So satisfying. And good for you - imagine that!

I like to spice up some ketchup to go wth them. Give this a try sometime!

TANGY SPICED KETCHUP

1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tablespoon coconut or olive oil
1 cup ketchup
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
dash cayenne pepper, or more to taste

Saute garlic in oil of your choice (I prefer coconut but olive does
just fine) over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes. Stir in ketchup and
spices, adjust seasoning to taste. Serve warm or refrigerated.

hey, i just thought i'd share this family recipe with you.

after baking the potatoes until almost ready (we sometimes do both sweet potatoes and regular potatoes) we pour over a dressing made from soy, honey and sesame oil**

once this dressing bakes onto the fries, we sprinkle over sesame seeds, a liberal amount of sesame oil and a little pepper / gochugaru (korean chilli powder)

voila, korean style sweet potato fries.

**(the dressing is made by heating honey and light soy sauce in a pot until the honey is completely dissolved. the dressing should be sweet/salty)

My point was more that you need to buy something called yams which are not really yams though, which I think is pretty much true all over the U.S. I haven't seen true yams, so I guess Utah is more limited.

soak the fries overnight in a bowl of water .... it makes them crispier when you bake them (for some reason!)

Kalyn, I bought two orange-fleshed sweet potatoes about a week ago (they're not easy to find here), and have been thinking of roasting them once I come across a good recipe. Now I've got many :)

I blog about food over at Nami-nami ( http://nami-nami.blogspot.com/ )

Good point! I wonder if there is anyone who doesn't like them? So far we haven't heard from anyone.

I just adore sweet potato fries and have made them in infinite variations--spicy, herby, salty.  I posted a recipe way back when I just started blogging, and it's still one of the recipes that's viewed regularly.  I've never met anyone who DOESN'T like sweet potato fries!

Sweet potato tempura!

The batter I used the last time I made it is not an authentic Japanese tempura batter, but a Hawaii-style one because that is how I learned to make it. Here's an old link from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin (it's the second recipe).

http://archives.starbulletin.com/2002/01/23/features/request.html

The tips about using ice water for the batter and keeping the batter bowl on ice are very important!

This weekend I am holding a cooking class and including sweet potato chili fries as one of the items! They're so easy and healthy, I think my students will love them. They're part of my all natural, whole foods based Tex-Mex Fest menu. :-)

We just slice, toss them around in olive oil and cayenne pepper and throw them in the oven. Yuuummm.

Funnily enough Lee also declared he didn't like sweet potatoes. Then I made sweet potato fries. He's now been reformed. ;-)

Sweet potato fries are my number one obsession. I can usually resist regular fries (unless they're those super crunchy thin ones...mmmm) but I'm helpless when it comes to sweet potato fries. Try out this recipe for Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries, which at least take some of the guilt out of this tasty treat. Enjoy!

... while it's true that REAL yams are difficult to find in the United States and that MOST root vegetables labeled "yams" in the United States -- it's simply NOT true that you can't buy real yams here in the U.S. Right here in Missouri in the middle of the country, I can buy real yams, albeit at a grocery that specializes in nothing but imported foods. And once you've HAD a real yam, you'll not confuse them with sweet potatoes, trust me. See Meet the Yam Man ( http://kitchen-parade-veggieventure.blogspot.com/2008/01/food-experiments-meet-yam-man.html ). It's my belief that we can't get real yams here because -- well, they're just not that good.

Sushi is my all-time favorite food, so it's high on my list of "must visit" places once I'm retired. Just need to work on making money so I can go to all those places!

This is the first time I've heard that sweet potato fries are popular in Japan. Thanks for sharing that! (It's a place I've been wanting to visit for a long time.)

I'm a recent convert to sweet potatoes, too, and it's all thanks to sweet potato fries! Of course, the first time I had them was at a barbecue truck by the side of the road, so I think they were infused with some of that smoky flavor. But I've since made them in the oven and they're delicious. Like you, I didn't like the combination of sweet potatoes and sugar that our moms used to make when we were kids. Without the added sugar, the natural sweetness of the potatoes shine through.

The Japanese love salty sweet potato (satsuma imo) fries and you can find vendors selling them at every single street fair. Since there is a holiday or festival almost every other week in this country, I have no trouble getting my fill. They are the best!
