BlogHer Original Post
Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching, so I hope you've started planning your menu if you're celebrating. I like turkey as well as the next person, but truly I think Thanksgiving is all about the side dishes, and last year I picked out BlogHer's Top Ten List of Thanksgiving Side Dishes. Of course new ideas for side dishes pop up every year, so I thought it would be fun to share some new side dish ideas and then see which one would be the favorite Thanksgiving side dish if BlogHer readers got to choose. After you look through the recipes I've spotlighted, leave a comment and let us know what you'd pick as your favorite side dish, whether it's one I've featured or something that's a tradition in your family.

from Dinner with Julie
You probably don't need a recipe for plain mashed potatoes, so I'm giving you some out-of-the-ordinary ideas. If your family likes bacon, these Bacon Smashed Potatoes from Dinner with Julie would be tasty for Thanksgiving. Other drool-worthy options are the Mashed Potatoes with Sour Cream and Chives from Eclectic Recipes or Roasted Garlic and Rosemary Mashed Potatoes from Dianne's Dishes.
Photo of Chestnut Stuffing
I thought this Chestnut Stuffing from Macheesmo looked just about perfect, but if you aren't sure about the chestnuts Nick has a link to the basic stuffing recipe too. Other stuffings that look good to me are Cornbread Dressing with Sausage and Apples from The Pioneer Woman Cooks, Vegan Stuffing from Happy Healthy Life and Gluten-Free Stuffing with Pancetta Sage Sausage from The W.H.O.L.E. Gang.

from Cookin' Canuck
Many people think green beans are a must for Thanksgiving, and a delicious option for healthful green beans is this recipe for Green Beans with Balsamic Roasted Shallots from Cookin' Canuck. I also love the looks of French Green Beans with Butter and Herbs from Simply Recipes, Green Beans with Balsamic Browned Butter from Pinch My Salt, and Spicy Green Beans with Ginger and Garlic from The Perfect Pantry.

from Kalyn's Kitchen
I was never a fan of the sugary sweet potatoes with marshmallows my mother used to make, but a few years ago I discovered savory sweet potatoes, and Soy-Glazed Sweet Potatoes with Sesame Seeds were one of my favorite dishes last Thanksgiving. You might also like Savory Stir-Fried Sweet Potatoes from A Veggie Venture or Molasses Whipped Sweet Potatoes from Cheap Healthy Good.
Photo of Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato Gratin
from Pinch My Salt
I'm crazy about butternut squash so for me it doesn't get much better than this Butternut Squash and Sweet Potato Gratin from Pinch My Salt. There's also a gorgeous Butternut Squash Gratin at Simple Bites, Butternut Squash Crumble from White on Rice Couple, and Butternut Squash and Parmesan Tart from Leite's Culinaria.

from Farmgirl Fare
I know there are people who claim not to like brussels sprouts, but I say those folks just haven't had brussels sprouts cooked well. I used to think I didn't like them myself, but now I know I'd like these Quick Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Lemon and Parmesan from Farmgirl Fare. Other recipes that appeal to me include Hashed Brussels Sprouts with Lemon from Simply Recipes and Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Proscuitto and Shallots from Our Life in the Kitchen.
Photo of Vidalia Onions Stuffed with Rice-Lentil Pilaf
from Fat Free Vegan Kitchen
In my family we'd always have Onions with Cheese Sauce for Thanksgiving, so onions seem like an essential Thanksgiving side dish to me. I think these Vidalia Onions Stuffed with Rice-Lentil Pilaf would be a fabulous side dish, or they could be a vegetarian main dish as well. I also love the sound of Parmigiano Reggiano Stuffed Onions Wrapped in Proscuitto di Parma from Ms. Adventures in Italy and Cipollini Onions Roasted with Balsamic Vinegar and Honey from Stephen Cooks.
Photo of Roasted Carrots
from The Pioneer Woman Cooks
If you haven't discovered the joys of carrots roasted with olive oil and herbs, check out how to make Roasted Carrots at The Pioneer Woman Cooks. More Thanksgiving-worthy carrot dishes include Roasted Rainbow Carrots and String Beans with Citrus-Sage Glaze from Food Blogga and Glazed Carrots with Rosemary from Jamie Cooks it Up.
Photo of Oven-Roasted Broccoli with Lemon, Chili-Garlic Oil, and Parmesan
from Pinch My Salt
A few years ago I discovered the joy of roasted vegetables, so Oven-Roasted Broccoli with Lemon, Chili-Garlic Oil, and Parmesan from Pincy My Salt sounds perfect to me. Other bloggers swooning over broccoli include Cate at Sweetnicks who made Caramelized Broccoli with Garlic and Supercharged Garlic Lemon Broccoli from Gluten Free Easily.
Photo of Roasted Cauliflower with Bacon and Garlic
from Steamy Kitchen
Finally, I've been seeing so many great recipes for Cauliflower that this year I bumped beets off the top ten list to include things like this Roasted Cauliflower with Bacon and Garlic from Steamy Kitchen. I'd also love to try Cauliflower Cheese with Mustard from Nami Nami and Cauliflower Gratin from Chocolate and Zucchini.
